Big Sky Ranch
Big Sky Ranch sits on the outskirts of Yellstown Settlement, right on the edge of the Bleeding Depths where the Overgrowth presses in with constant, vegetative hunger. Crude fencing reinforced with wooden spikes connects small sheds and wooden buildings, while pointed stakes and concealed pitfalls ring the outside, trapping uninvited visitors of both the living and unliving variety. The ranchers who work here are a paranoid bunch of Natural Ones, more superstitious than most, and with reason.
The ranch specializes in raising and taming wild game, primarily elkhorn deer, for meat. The work never stops because neither do the threats. The Overgrowth attempts to reclaim cleared fields as thick forest, and the Unborn of Poisoned Thorn raid livestock with a persistence that borders on malice. Each year, the ranchers select one person to journey into the Bleeding Depths, leaving an elkhorn deer as an offering and returning with one of the crystals found within the Overgrowth. A successful pilgrimage heralds good luck for both the ranch and Yellstown Settlement. Failure portends a year of hardship, and the ranchers take the omen seriously.
The ranch periodically holds fairs and livestock shows for others in the region, providing rare moments of community in a landscape that otherwise offers only work, vigilance, and the constant awareness that the forest beyond the spike fence wants everything back.
