Bone Harvester

There is a story every settlement tells, and the details change but the shape stays the same. A morgue goes wrong. The aberrant population crosses a threshold that nobody was watching closely enough. The dead stop behaving like the dead are supposed to behave. And then something walks out of the morgue that is not a zombie in any way the word has prepared you for. It is quiet. It is patient. It glides more than it walks, and when it stops moving it becomes so still that for a moment you might convince yourself it is not there at all. That moment is a mercy. It does not last.
The Bone Harvester is an Apocalypse Grade threat: the highest tier in the documented undead taxonomy, reserved for entities that emerge only under the most dire circumstances and that fundamentally rewrite the rules of engagement. Every Violent Dead type in this catalog is dangerous. The Bone Harvester is something else. It is immune to every mechanic that targets zombies, including Bane damage, because it does not count as a zombie in any standard sense. It cannot be harmed while a single active zombie remains within its line of sight, and it is never alone. Twenty to sixty additional undead spawn from its location over the course of an engagement, a tide of bodies that must be cleared before the Harvester itself can even be touched.
What makes the Bone Harvester a genuine existential threat is not its durability or its escort. It is what it takes from you. Infection Devour: a methodical consumption of the Infection that keeps a survivor alive. Twenty counts and it strips away nearly everything, leaving a single thread of Infection between you and permanent death. This is not incidental damage. This is the thing that the entire encounter is designed to do. Settlements that have faced a Bone Harvester and survived do not celebrate the victory. They count who they lost and measure the cost in Infection that will take months to rebuild.
Kill it and it does not die. Corpse Swap transfers its consciousness to any zombie within line of sight, killing that host instantly and resurrecting with full health and refreshed abilities. Kill it again and it swaps again. Clear the field of every zombie and finally put it down, and it retreats to the morgue at half strength with a thirty-minute window before it returns at full power with reinforcements. Mass Delusions isolate survivors from each other, severing communication and coordination in a ten-foot bubble where the world beyond simply ceases to exist. Unwilling Relocation teleports groups of survivors up to a hundred yards away, scattering your force across terrain you may not control. The Bone Harvester does not fight you. It dismantles you. It takes apart every advantage a settlement can muster and feeds on what remains.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Bone Harvester does not look like the dead. It looks like grief wearing a body. The face is smooth and white, porcelain-pale, with thick dark streaks cascading down from the lower lash line like tears made of ink that never dry. The eyes are red-rimmed, darkened around the lids, and they track with an awareness that no shambler or Rager possesses. There is nothing rotting here, nothing bloated or torn. The presentation is spectral and sorrowful, closer to an apparition than a corpse, and that wrongness is what makes it so unsettling. Every other undead threat in the wasteland looks like death. The Bone Harvester looks like something that has moved past death entirely and come out the other side as something worse.
The body is human-sized, unremarkable in silhouette, which makes it easy to lose in a crowd of its own escort until it moves. And when it moves, you know.

Biological Traits

Every ability the Bone Harvester carries is designed to ensure the encounter ends on its terms. Triggered Vulnerability renders it immune to all damage while any active zombie remains in line of sight, requiring survivors to clear the entire field before engaging the Harvester itself. Corpse Swap lets it abandon a dying body and inhabit any zombie nearby, fully refreshed, instantly killing the host. This can repeat as long as zombies exist in range, making "killing" the Harvester a process of exhausting its available hosts. Morgue Link means that even true death is temporary: it retreats to the morgue at half strength, and if not pursued within thirty minutes, it returns at full power with five to twenty additional zombies.
Infection Devour is the encounter's true purpose. Twenty counts of feeding strips a target of nearly all their Infection, leaving one point between them and permanent death. AoE Murder delivers psionic mass kills. AoE Bleeding Mark applies ongoing psionic damage across groups. AoE No Escape locks down entire formations. Mass Delusions sever all perception beyond ten feet, isolating survivors from allies they can hear screaming but cannot see or reach. Unwilling Relocation scatters groups up to a hundred yards in any direction. Morgue Embodiment spawns twenty to sixty zombies over the course of the fight, resetting if the Harvester goes twenty minutes without active combat.
Countering a Bone Harvester requires coordinated settlement-scale response. Satisfy its Triggered Vulnerability by eliminating all line-of-sight zombies. Use No Escape delivered as a Cutthroat skill to counter Unwilling Relocation. Pursue through the Morgue Link within the thirty-minute window. Accept that Infection loss is the expected outcome, not the failure state. Survival is the victory condition.

Behaviour

The Bone Harvester observes before it acts. It stands vertical and motionless at the edge of the engagement while its escort expands outward, testing the perimeter, drawing fire, occupying attention. It watches. The stillness is not passivity; it is patience. It is waiting for someone to fall.
When a target goes down, the Bone Harvester approaches with slow, deliberate purpose. Each step has the eerie grace of a glide, arms hanging loose, fingers twitching occasionally as if listening to a signal no living thing can hear. It does not respond to bait. It does not chase runners. It moves toward the fallen, the vulnerable, the exposed, and it begins to feed. Between those purposeful approaches come sudden, unexpected bursts of speed that shatter any illusion of safety. The pattern is disorienting by design: long stretches of creeping inevitability punctuated by moments of lethal acceleration. It cannot be predicted. It cannot be drawn away. It simply comes, and when it arrives, it takes what it came for.
