Burster
At a distance, a Burster looks like any other walking corpse. It shambles. It groans. It sways with the same mindless rhythm as the rest of the Horde. Survivors who have only ever fought Shamblers might see one across a field and think they know what they are dealing with. That mistake has a short shelf life. The moment a Burster registers living prey, something changes. The shamble becomes a sprint. The groan becomes a scream. And the distance that felt comfortable a moment ago is closing faster than anyone expected.
Bursters are the Endless Horde's answer to survivors who have learned to keep their distance. Where Shamblers rely on numbers and persistence, Bursters rely on shock and sudden violence. Their speed comes in bursts, sudden explosive sprints that last long enough to close a gap and not much longer. After the burst fades, they return to the same slow shuffle. But by then, they are already on top of you.
The tactical calculus flips entirely from Shamblers. Ranged weapons work at full effectiveness against Bursters; their bloated, pressurized bodies lack the strange resilience that lets Shamblers shrug off bullets. The smart play is to shoot them before they start running. Once that scream begins and the legs start pumping, the window for clean shots narrows fast. Survivors who waste their ammunition on Shamblers and save their blades for Bursters have the equation exactly backwards.
In a mixed Horde encounter, Bursters are the priority target. They scatter formations, chase down stragglers, and create the chaos that lets the slower dead close in. Put them down at range, Double Tap them on the ground, and deal with the Shamblers at your leisure. Ignore them, and the Shamblers become the least of your problems.

Basic Information
Anatomy
Something is wrong with a Burster's body, and you can see it before it ever moves. The flesh is swollen and distended, stretched tight over bulging masses that press outward like boils about to rupture. The skin has gone past the grays and greens of standard decomposition into angrier colors: livid reds, deep purples, bruised yellows, and patches of necrotic black. The overall impression is of a body under immense internal pressure, as though the Infection has filled it with something volatile that the skin can barely contain.
Up close, the texture is worse than the color. The surface is slick with fluid weeping from cracks in the skin. Protrusions cluster along the torso and limbs, some firm, some soft enough to shift visibly with movement. Whatever process creates a Burster, it reshapes the corpse from the inside out. The result is something that looks less like a walking dead person and more like a biological weapon waiting to go off.

Biological Traits
The defining trait is speed. Bursters can sprint for short periods, closing distance that survivors rely on for safety. This makes them the single most dangerous Horde type to encounter at range without a plan. Unlike Shamblers, they have no special resistance to ranged weapons; bullets, bolts, and thrown weapons all land with full force. The trade is explicit: what they gain in speed, they lose in durability against ranged fire.
At higher threat levels, Bursters develop additional predatory tools. They can cripple limbs to prevent escape and lock targets in place so running is no longer an option. The upgraded variants hit harder across more sustained engagements and can shrug off attempts to slow them down. Like all Horde types, they rise after being dropped, returning to the fight with refreshed reserves. Double Tap remains the only permanent answer, and it needs to be applied before the corpse gets back on its feet and starts screaming again.

Behaviour
Idle Bursters are nearly indistinguishable from Shamblers in how they move: the same slow, mindless shuffle, the same vacant forward drift. The difference reveals itself the instant prey enters their awareness. The transition is sudden and unmistakable. A guttural growl builds into a full-throated scream, the body lurches forward, and the Burster launches into a dead sprint that can last up to a minute before the burst of energy burns out.
During a speed burst, the Burster is frantic. It does not pace itself or choose its angle of approach. It simply charges, arms swinging, mouth open, driven by whatever crude instinct the Infection has wired into its rotting brain. When the burst expires, the body visibly slows, returning to the baseline shamble as though a switch has been thrown. Experienced survivors learn to recognize the transition: watch for the scream, track the sprint, and be ready to act in the window of exhaustion that follows. The Burster will sprint again if it has the reserves, but each burst is finite. Patience and positioning can turn the encounter from a panic into a controlled engagement.
