Mauler

A Mauler does not sneak up on you. It does not need to. It comes at you fast, fists swinging, and the message is plain: you are not leaving this fight until one of you is done. Where Ragers scatter a line through chaotic aggression and Mass Cadavers absorb punishment like rolling fortresses, the Mauler fills a simpler and more personal role. It finds you, it grabs you, and it does not let go.
Maulers are the melee lockdown specialists of the Violent Dead class. Every ability in their arsenal exists to keep survivors pinned in close quarters where the Mauler's raw brawling power decides the outcome. No Escape prevents retreat. Take Down puts you on the ground. Ground and Pound finishes what Take Down starts. Death Stalk means that even if you somehow break free, the Mauler marks you and follows, turning a single encounter into a prolonged hunt. The combination is brutally effective: once a Mauler has you engaged, disengaging requires help from someone who is not also fighting for their life.
Break Armor strips defensive equipment with methodical efficiency, peeling away a survivor's protection hit by hit until bare flesh is all that remains. In a protracted fight, this is what makes the Mauler lethal even to well-equipped groups. Your armor does not protect you; it buys you time, and the Mauler is built to spend that time faster than you can replace it. Rapid Rise Again or Robust Rise Again (requiring up to four Double Taps for advanced variants) ensures the Mauler keeps coming back, turning each engagement into a war of attrition it is designed to win.
The Mauler's one exploitable weakness: it has no ranged attacks and no ranged damage reduction. Firearms deal full damage. A disciplined line of shooters keeping distance can drop a Mauler before it closes. The problem, of course, is that Maulers rarely travel alone, and the rest of the horde is built to ensure that "keeping distance" is not an option for long.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The build is imposing: heavy muscle packed onto a frame that broadcasts raw physical power. Scarred arms and exposed torsos bear the evidence of constant combat, layered with gashes, bruises, and wounds that never healed and never needed to. The face is hardened into a permanent expression of aggression, bared teeth framed by bloodstains that extend from the mouth across the jaw and down the hands. Clothing is minimal and tight, stripped for flexibility rather than modesty.
What stands out are the hands. Bone protrusions jut from the knuckles like improvised weapons grown from the inside out, giving every swing the weight and edge of something between a fist and a club. The Mauler looks like what it is: a dead thing purpose-built for close-quarters violence, carrying the marks of every fight it has walked through and the expectation of every fight still to come.

Biological Traits

The Mauler's threat profile centers on lockdown and attrition. No Escape prevents disengagement; advanced variants project this as an area effect, trapping multiple survivors simultaneously. Take Down puts targets prone. Ground and Pound delivers sustained damage to downed targets, punishing anyone who hits the dirt. Break Armor systematically strips defensive equipment, accelerating the kill. Death Stalk marks a specific target for relentless pursuit, removing retreat as a viable strategy.
The critical vulnerability is range. Maulers carry no ranged attacks and no ranged damage reduction, making them the only Violent Dead type fully susceptible to firearms. A shooter with distance and clear sightlines can put one down efficiently. Permanent neutralization requires Double Tap, with advanced variants demanding up to four applications due to Robust Rise Again. Sturdy Corpse immunity nullifies knockback, mangle, and nail effects, so crowd-control tactics that work on lesser undead are wasted here. The tactical calculus is simple: shoot them before they reach you, because once they do, your options narrow to "fight through it or die trying."

Behaviour

Fast and direct. A Mauler closes distance with relentless forward momentum, no stealth, no flanking, no hesitation. It rushes in, delivers a series of wide swinging strikes, and if the target is still standing, it briefly withdraws before charging back with renewed fury. The cycle repeats until the target stops moving.
The fighting style is chaotic yet focused: wide punches meant to overwhelm guard, powerful grabs to knock targets off balance, and a constant pressure that denies any breathing room. In group encounters, Maulers serve as the lock while other threats serve as the key. A Mauler pins its target in place with No Escape and Take Down, keeping them occupied and vulnerable while slower, heavier Violent Dead close the distance. Death Stalk adds a persistent pursuit element; a Mauler that has marked a target will follow that individual with single-minded fixation, turning retreat into delay rather than escape.
