Nicolette Lang

Nicolette Lang argued for mercy, and the wasteland answered with a blighted shiv.
She co-led the Prodigal Soldiers alongside her father Armon Lang, commanding armed contingents of warrior priests and lay soldiers in campaigns to purge undead nests from the wastes. The work was violent, necessary, and within the bounds of what the Sainthood of Ashes considered righteous. Nicolette was willing to fight. She was not willing to commit indiscriminate slaughter, and that distinction would cost her everything.
When the Prodigal Soldiers encountered a mixed settlement of Retrogrades and Lascarians on an irradiated river, Armon ordered the community culled. Nicolette opposed the plan. She saw survivors where her father saw threats, and she argued against the drastic measures he demanded. The argument never resolved. That night, a group of Lascarians allied with the settlement launched an ambush, and Nicolette was struck by a blighted shiv while defending her father.
She died from the wound. Her death broke Armon Lang in ways that no battle ever had. What followed, the massacres of Retrograde families, the burning of Lascarian hovels with inhabitants trapped inside, the transformation of the Prodigal Soldiers into a force of ethnic slaughter, was the answer her father gave to a world that had killed the one person who still argued for restraint.

Personal history

Nicolette Lang served as co-leader of the Prodigal Soldiers alongside her father Armon Lang, commanding anti-undead campaigns in the name of the Sainthood of Ashes. She was a capable commander who shared her father's willingness to fight but not his willingness to extend that violence to living populations.
The break between father and daughter came at a settlement of Retrogrades and Lascarians on an irradiated river. Armon ordered the settlement culled. Nicolette argued against the plan, advocating restraint where her father saw only threat. Before the disagreement could resolve, a nighttime ambush by Lascarians from the settlement struck both of them. Nicolette was fatally wounded by a blighted shiv while defending Armon from the attack.
Her death was the catalyst for everything that followed. Armon Lang, consumed by grief, ordered the massacre of multiple Retrograde families and had Lascarian dwellings burned with the inhabitants trapped inside. The Prodigal Soldiers became a splinter faction dedicated to exterminating Retrogrades and Lascarians wherever they are found. Nicolette, who had argued for mercy, became the justification for atrocities she would have opposed.
Prodigal Soldiers co-leader; her death at Lascarian hands catalyzed her father's descent into massacre.
