Nox

Nox was raised for the work. A Lascarian trained from childhood by a mentor known only as "Mother," Nox learned to look like no one at all: a scavenger, a merchant, someone boring enough to forget and forgettable enough to pass through places no one else could reach. Whether Mother was a biological parent or simply a handler is unclear, but the training was thorough. By eighteen, Nox had been recruited by both the Sunken Saints and Murder Inc., operating locally within the Iron Works.
When a disagreement erupted within Murder Inc.'s Inner Circle, Mother told Nox that larger things were calling. Nox chose a side in the split, left the organization, and began killing exclusively for the Iron Works on behalf of the Rat King and the Full Dead strategist E. Koch. Nox recruited a Vegasian named Quinn to serve as a spy partner, and the two became an efficient team: Quinn gathered intelligence through social channels, and Nox turned that intelligence into targeted killings. The arrangement continued after the Rat King's death, with Koch directing operations.
Nox's final mission during the Fall of the Ironworks was the assassination of the Uprising leader Verity, and the mission succeeded. Verity died during the boarding of a resistance ship. But in the same engagement, Nox was killed in a skirmish, caught by the Rusty Lanterns after a moment of fatal inattention. Nox described the death as stupid and careless, a professional's contempt for an amateur mistake. In the Mortis Amaranthine, Nox cycled through feigned emotions with trained precision, sympathy, anger, charm, each a tool of interrogation defense, before reverting to the cold center that was the only authentic thing the assassin had ever possessed.
