Rocky Mountain Monster

Most people in Mountaina have heard of the Rocky Mountain Monster. Far fewer have actually seen one. It lives where almost nothing else can: the high peaks and sheer cliff faces that border the Overgrowth, terrain so vertical and exposed that predators cannot follow and prey cannot reach. The Monster (the name carries more myth than menace) is a medium-sized herbivore with scraggly fur that varies in thickness and color by region, long curled horns wrapping close to its skull, and bony plates along its spine and around its vital organs that resemble natural armor.
What sets the Rocky Mountain Monster apart is its hooves. They are hardened to a density that allows them to cut into raw stone, giving the animal a grip on surfaces that would be unclimbable for anything else its size. It moves across cliff faces with an agility that borders on the surreal, leaping between ledges and traversing near-vertical rock with the casual confidence of something born to the task. Herds are small: one or two males and several females, identifiable by their smaller horns, moving together across the high reaches in patterns that have more to do with wind and snowpack than any ground-level geography.
The Rocky Mountain Monster is not aggressive. It avoids people, avoids predators, and avoids conflict with the thoroughness of something that has never needed to fight. If cornered on a ledge with nowhere to run (an unlikely scenario given its terrain advantage), it will use those thick curled horns to ram a threat off the cliff side. The fall does the rest. Capturing one is considered nearly impossible; their knowledge of the mountain terrain and their ability to traverse surfaces no pursuer can follow makes them effectively untouchable in their own domain. They remain more legend than fact for most wastelanders, glimpsed as distant shapes on impossibly high ridgelines, proof that something up there has figured out how to live where nothing should.
