Shallow Sleepers

Every shallow pool is a potential grave. Baywalkers learn this before they learn to swim.
Shallow Sleepers are aquatic ambush undead that lie submerged in coastal pools, river shallows, marshy streets, and flooded urban areas, concealed beneath weeds, mud, and accumulated debris. They use elongated arms to drag surrounding cover over themselves until they are virtually invisible in the murky water. Then they wait. When living prey steps within reach, the attack is instantaneous: a sudden, explosive lunge upward from the waterline, claw and bite strikes delivered with enough force to prevent escape, and a sustained assault intended to kill before the target can break free.
The concealment is the Sleeper's entire strategy. Partially rotted flesh obscured by silt and waterlogged debris becomes indistinguishable from the natural bottom of a shallow pool, and the Dead Man Float ability enhances their stealth to a degree that makes visual detection unreliable even for experienced watchers. A Sleeper does not pursue. It does not patrol. It selects a spot, buries itself in debris, and waits with the patience of something that has no heartbeat to hurry.
In the Mass and Baytowne, Shallow Sleepers are one of the deadliest and most persistent threats Baywalker communities face. The flooded terrain provides an effectively unlimited supply of concealment positions, and the Baywalkers' livelihood depends on moving through exactly the kind of shallow waterways that Sleepers favor. Experienced Baywalkers have developed techniques for detecting submerged threats: probing ahead with long poles, watching for unnatural accumulations of debris at the waterline, noting disturbed sediment patterns. These precautions are taken seriously because the alternative is discovering a Sleeper the hard way.
On dry ground, Sleepers are shambling, slow-moving undead with no particular advantages. The danger is exclusively waterborne. A Sleeper that has been lured or dragged out of its concealment loses the element of surprise and the killing power that comes with it. The challenge is that most encounters begin with the Sleeper's ambush, not with the survivor's preparation.
Multiple Sleepers may occupy the same stretch of waterway without coordination. Each operates independently, selecting its own concealment spot and attacking whatever prey wanders into its individual reach. The cumulative effect, however, is that heavily infested shorelines become functionally impassable for anyone not prepared to fight their way through a series of ambushes.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A Shallow Sleeper's body is partially rotted and waterlogged, caked in the mud, silt, and aquatic debris of prolonged submersion. The most distinctive feature is the arms: elongated beyond human proportions, adapted for reaching and grasping with a range that allows the Sleeper to seize prey standing at the water's edge from a concealed position several feet away.
The rest of the body is human-sized and unremarkable by undead standards, distinguished primarily by the degree of decay and the thoroughness of its natural camouflage. Mud and waterlogged plant matter adhere to the partially rotted flesh in layers that accumulate over time, blending the Sleeper's outline into the bottom of whatever pool or shallows it occupies. When lying flat in shallow water, the body is nearly invisible beneath even a thin layer of debris.
The elongated arms are not merely longer; they are functionally adapted for pulling, both for dragging debris over the body as concealment and for seizing prey with the kind of grip strength that makes escape a matter of cutting yourself free rather than simply pulling away.

Biological Traits

Dead Man Float provides significantly enhanced concealment while the Sleeper is submerged, making it nearly undetectable by visual observation. This is the core of the threat: if you cannot see it, you cannot avoid it, and by the time you feel the hands, the fight is already on the Sleeper's terms.
Dual claw attacks and a powerful bite deliver the ambush damage. The strikes are aimed at killing before the target can break away, compensating for the Sleeper's inability to pursue effectively on dry ground. Mindless undead immunities round out the defensive profile, supplemented by the natural camouflage of a mud-caked, debris-covered corpse lying in murky water.
The principal weakness is speed, or the lack of it. On land, Shallow Sleepers are shambling undead with no special mobility. A survivor who breaks free of the initial ambush and gains dry ground has effectively won the encounter. The challenge, repeated endlessly in the flooded territories of the Mass, is that the Sleeper usually gets the first move.

Behaviour

Ambush predation is the Sleeper's only mode of engagement. It lies flat in shallow water, uses its elongated arms to drag weeds and debris over itself, and becomes part of the waterline. There is no hunting, no pursuit, no territorial patrol. The Sleeper occupies a position and waits for prey to come to it. This makes their threat binary: either a survivor steps into range and triggers an explosive ambush, or nothing happens.
The ambush itself is designed for immediate lethality. The Sleeper erupts from concealment with surprising force, striking with dual claws and a powerful bite. The attacks are delivered with enough strength to prevent the target from fleeing during the critical first seconds. A Sleeper that fails to ground its prey quickly loses its advantage, as it lacks the speed to pursue on open ground.
Sleepers do not coordinate. Multiple specimens in the same waterway operate as independent threats, each defending its own concealment spot. This means that a survivor who escapes one Sleeper's ambush may immediately trigger another. Baywalker salvage crews mapping safe routes through flooded territory treat each section of shoreline as a separate threat assessment.
The instinctive concealment behavior, pulling debris overhead and holding still in shallow water, is the Sleeper's only observable "intelligence." Everything else about it is standard mindless undead behavior, elevated to lethality by the single adaptation that makes it invisible until it is too late.
