The Lilac Empire

The valley opens between two mountain chains like cupped hands, and the city within glows. Not the dull red of Iron Slave labor camps or the sick flicker of Infection sites. This light is varied: the warm crimson of Iron Slaves working the Empire Steam Plant alongside a colder, stranger luminance. Bluish white radiance pulses from the skin of exalted Accensorites walking the temple streets. At dusk, when the mountain shadows swallow the lower buildings first, the Lilac Empire looks like a city lit from within by competing fires.
It was not always a temple city. Pure Bloods settled the valley first, drawn by terrain that shielded them from storms and most radioactive fallout. They rebuilt a city on the favorable landscape with money and engineering, the way Pure Bloods tend to build things: carefully, with an eye toward permanence. Then the Accensorites arrived. Fallow Hopes, mostly, trickling in at first, then in numbers that shifted the balance of power the way water shifts a riverbed. The Pure Blood founders kept their wealth. The Accensorites took everything else.
Access to the Lilac Empire runs through the Toll Takers, checkpoint guards who screen every soul seeking entry. Past their gates, the settlement unfolds in layers of faith and function. The City of the Nation sits at the heart, temples crowding every available surface, religious services running at all hours. The air there carries the constant murmur of devotion. At the western edge, two white metal structures curl skyward like wisps of steam: the Giant Wisps, memorials to fallen Accensorites and Fallow Hopes members, doubling as lookout towers for the Western Watch.
Rail's End Trade Post is where the outside world touches the Lilac Empire and goes no further. A vestigial arm of the Ironworks rail line, now managed by the Rail's End Trade Company, it functions as the single conduit for external commerce. The Mountain Roost barracks perch on an eastern peak above the rail line, manned by the Red Roosters, an elite Accensorite troop that has calcified over time into an old boys' club. From their vantage point, they can observe miles of track and spot incoming trains long before they arrive.
In the surrounding mountains, the Big Game Lodge draws hunters after the rarest and most mutated beasts. The Chattering Teeth collect trophy teeth from kills, a currency of prestige within the settlement's competitive culture. Below it all, the Empire Steam Plant converts waste to electricity through a process its operators deliberately misname. The Valve Union keeps the plant running. The Northern Expansionists, led by Shiloh Westbrook, look past the mountain walls and argue that the Lilac Empire's borders should not stop at the valley's edge. They are building an army. The temple city is becoming a military one, and the glow on the horizon grows brighter each year.

History

Pure Bloods found the valley first. Two mountain chains bracketing a stretch of sheltered ground, shielded from storms, filtered from the worst of the fallout that scoured the open territories. They brought money, engineering, and the conviction that civilization could be rebuilt if the right people were in charge. For a time, it worked. The city rose. Trade flowed through the rail line. The mountains kept the worst of the wasteland at arm's length.
The Accensorites changed the arithmetic. They came for the safety of the valley and the proximity to faithful communities along the Rust Coast, and the Fallow Hopes came in the greatest numbers. They did not seize power through force. They did not need to. Each generation brought more believers and fewer Pure Blood families willing to argue with the demographic tide. The wealth remained in Pure Blood hands, but wealth alone does not govern a city where the faithful outnumber the founders. The temples multiplied. The military ranks filled with zealots who glowed when their devotion deepened. The city that Pure Bloods built became the city that Accensorites inherited.
The transformation was not violent, but it was total. The Lilac Empire today is a temple city with a standing army, funded by Pure Blood capital and driven by Accensorite conviction. The Red Roosters drill at the Mountain Roost. The Western Watch mans the Giant Wisps. The Northern Expansionists draw maps of territories beyond the valley and speak openly about cleansing the earth. The Pure Bloods who remain understand that their money built something they no longer control, and the glow from the City of the Nation's temples has begun to look less like illumination and more like a signal fire.
