Sub-sect of Sainthood of Ashes
The Trailwardens are the guardians of connection in the wasteland, members of the Sainthood of Ashes who have dedicated themselves to keeping the fragile threads of trade, communication, and travel intact. They clear paths, deliver vital resources, escort critical supplies and individuals, and fight to ensure that the roads binding settlements together remain open. To the Trailwardens, every path is a lifeline, and every journey carries the potential to save lives.
Born from the union of two earlier groups (the Path Finders, who sought to make travel safer, and the Postal, who valued unflinching duty and the pursuit of purpose) the Trailwardens combine compassion with efficiency and grit with hope. Their tools are practical and symbolic: a sturdy lantern for guiding through darkness, and a bladed trench shovel for the labor and service the road demands. An inside joke among the Trailwardens holds that they carry the shovel because they are always digging themselves out of serious trouble.
One source of tension with the broader Sainthood is that the Trailwardens charge for their services. Delivery, escort, and protection all come with a price, and that price funds ongoing operations. Many within the faith find this required transaction distasteful and contrary to the Sainthood's principles of selfless service.
