Armon Lang

Armon Lang founded the Prodigal Soldiers as a force to purge undead nests and protect the living. What they became is something else entirely.
He and his daughter Nicolette led armed contingents of warrior priests and lay soldiers through the wastes, training them for anti-undead operations and earning a reputation for effective, brutal efficiency. The work was righteous by any Sainthood standard. Then they encountered a settlement on an irradiated river, a mixed community of Retrogrades and Lascarians, and Lang ordered it culled. Nicolette argued against the plan. She saw survivors, not targets.
The settlement's Lascarians answered the disagreement for them. During a nighttime parlay that turned into an ambush, a Lascarian struck Nicolette with a blighted shiv. She died defending her father from the attack. What remained of Armon Lang after that night was grief compressed into something that no longer distinguished between undead threats and living people of certain strains. He ordered the Retrograde families slaughtered. He had the Lascarian hovels set ablaze with the dwellers trapped inside.
Reports of Prodigal Soldier attacks continue to surface across the wastes. Whether Armon himself still leads them or only his methods persist through his followers is a question no one has been able to answer. The Sainthood's reputation bears the stain of his crusade regardless.

Personal history

Armon Lang's descent from Sainthood warrior to war criminal traces through a single event and its aftermath. He and his daughter Nicolette co-led the Prodigal Soldiers on campaigns to purge undead nests, training warrior priests and lay soldiers in anti-undead operations that earned genuine respect within the Sainthood of Ashes.
The break came at a settlement of Retrogrades and Lascarians on an irradiated river. Lang wanted the settlement culled. Nicolette argued for restraint. Before the argument could resolve, a nighttime ambush by the settlement's Lascarians ended with Nicolette fatally wounded by a blighted shiv while defending her father.
Armon's response was total. He ordered the massacre of multiple Retrograde families and had Lascarian hovels burned with the inhabitants trapped inside. The killings were not strategic. They were indiscriminate reprisals that crossed every line the Sainthood's doctrine draws between justice and atrocity. The Prodigal Soldiers became a splinter faction dedicated to the extermination of Retrogrades and Lascarians wherever they are found, and reports of their attacks continue to surface across the wastes. Whether Armon himself is still alive or only his followers carry on is unknown.
