Armored Critter
Some things in the wasteland you can outrun. Some you can outsmart. And then there are the ones you simply cannot hurt, at least not with anything short of specialized firepower and a plan that accounts for failure. Armored critters fall squarely into that last category. They are the creatures that mutation has wrapped in natural plating, exoskeletal ridges, or slabs of bulk muscle so dense that conventional weapons bounce off like thrown pebbles.
Every environment in the wastes produces its own variant. A forest armored critter might carry bark-fused chitin across its shoulders. An urban specimen could sport plates of fused debris grown into its hide, the ruins becoming part of its body over generations. What they share is the same deliberate, heavy gait: each step lands with visible weight, and the ground gives a little beneath them. They do not charge. They do not need to. They advance, they absorb punishment, and when they close the distance, the crushing force behind their strikes ends arguments quickly.
At the lower threat tiers, an armored critter is a nuisance with a tough shell. Ten points of armor over ten Body means a few extra swings to put it down. Inconvenient, not deadly. But the scaling is steep. By the time you reach a Menace-tier specimen, thirty points of armor layer over ninety Body, the creature shrugs off stagger effects, and (disturbingly) it has developed the dexterity to manipulate objects. At Catastrophic and Apocalyptic tiers, the armor values climb to forty and sixty respectively, Natural Armor and Mental Armor stack on top, and the creature can burrow underground, shatter the ground beneath your feet, and crush anything it catches. The Apocalyptic-tier armored critter is less an animal and more a geological event with teeth.
The critical weakness, and the only reason settlements survive encounters with higher-tier specimens, is that Body damage bypasses the Armored value entirely. Specialized tactics, heavy weapons, and attacks that target the creature's vitality rather than its shell are the difference between a successful hunt and a memorial.

Basic Information
Anatomy
The defining feature is the exterior: thick, reinforced plating that covers the creature's body in overlapping segments. The exact form varies by specimen and environment. Some carry chitin plates reminiscent of pre-Fall beetle carapaces, scaled up to nightmarish proportions. Others display layers of calcified bone ridges, dense enough to turn a blade edge. A few have been reported with what appears to be fused metal and stone embedded in their hides, as though the mutation drew building materials into the growing tissue.
Beneath the armor, the musculature is dense and compacted. These are not agile creatures. Every limb is thick, built for absorbing impact and delivering crushing blows rather than quick repositioning. The joints move with visible effort, the weight of the plating dictating a range of motion that favors power over flexibility. At higher threat tiers, the body mass increases dramatically, and the creature's footfalls carry enough force to crack packed earth.

Biological Traits
The signature mechanic is the Armored value: a damage buffer that absorbs incoming attacks before Body takes any harm. This value scales from 10 at Nuisance tier to 60 at Apocalyptic tier, and it stacks with Natural Armor and Mental Armor at the highest threat levels. Conventional weapon strikes chip away at the armor first, which means a sustained fight against a high-tier specimen requires either overwhelming sustained damage or attacks that bypass the buffer entirely through Body damage.
Spike Damage on brawling strikes scales sharply through the tiers, and higher specimens gain access to Ground Shatter (area denial through terrain destruction), Crushing Force (devastating single-target attacks), Mangle (crippling limb damage), and Teed Off (a powerful finishing strike). At Catastrophic tier, Burrow allows the creature to tunnel underground, bypassing surface-level defenses. The Apocalyptic tier forces a strategic tradeoff: the creature must choose between Melee Damage Reduction and advanced object manipulation, meaning a settlement facing one can at least predict which tactical problem they will encounter.

Behaviour
Armored critters rely on resilience rather than cunning. They do not ambush. They do not flee. They advance at a steady pace, absorb whatever is thrown at them, and close to striking range with the confidence of something that has never needed to be afraid. Lower-tier specimens behave like territorial animals: they respond to threats with a slow, deliberate approach and strike when cornered or provoked.
At Menace tier and above, something shifts. The creature begins to demonstrate rudimentary problem-solving, most visibly through the unsettling development of functional grasping ability. Survivors have reported Menace-tier armored critters pulling apart barricade components and pushing through obstacles that should have slowed them. At Catastrophic tier, the dexterity becomes genuinely alarming: these creatures can manipulate objects with purpose, dig through earth to bypass fortifications, and use the terrain itself as a weapon through ground-shattering impacts. An Apocalyptic-tier specimen does not so much fight as demolish everything in its path.
