Carnivorous Critter

Hunger is the simplest motivation in the wasteland, and nothing embodies it more purely than a carnivorous critter. These are the apex predators of the mutated animal kingdom: creatures built from tooth to tail for the pursuit, capture, and consumption of flesh. They do not scavenge. They do not graze. They hunt, and they do not stop hunting until they have fed or been put down permanently.
What separates a carnivorous critter from every other type of wasteland fauna is the sheer relentlessness of its aggression. There is no posturing, no territorial display, no warning growl. The moment prey registers, the creature commits. Pronounced teeth designed for ripping and tearing, claw-like appendages that hook into flesh and hold, predatory movement that shifts between ambush stillness and explosive closing speed. A carnivorous critter in motion is a study in biological efficiency stripped of everything except the drive to feed.
At lower threat tiers, they are dangerous but manageable. A Nuisance-tier specimen is a hungry animal with sharp teeth and basic Cannibalism instinct. It attacks, it feeds, and a few solid hits put it down. The scaling, however, is brutal. Hazard-tier carnivores develop Abduct, the ability to seize a target and drag them away from the safety of their group. Menace-tier specimens gain Awareness to detect hidden prey and Consume Flesh to restore their own health mid-fight. By Catastrophic tier, Death Stalk and Bleeding Mark turn the creature into a relentless pursuer that marks its prey and follows until the chase ends. The Apocalyptic tier is where the category earns its reputation: Gulp, Torn Asunder, Murder, and Area of Effect No Escape mean the creature can devour targets whole, tear them apart, and prevent any retreat from the killing field.
Carnivorous critters lack the defensive abilities of their armored or regenerative cousins. No armor, no damage reduction, no healing until the higher tiers grant Sturdy Critter. Their survival strategy is straightforward: kill and eat faster than you can be killed. For most encounters, that strategy works.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Everything about the carnivorous critter's body is oriented toward killing and eating. The teeth are the first thing survivors notice: pronounced, designed for ripping and tearing, often visible even when the mouth is closed. Some specimens display multiple rows. Others have elongated canines that curve backward, ensuring that anything bitten cannot pull free easily.
Claw-like appendages are common across variants, ranging from hooked talons on limbed predators to barbed prehensile structures on more exotic mutations. The body is lean and muscular, built for explosive speed rather than sustained endurance. The eyes track movement with predatory focus, and survivors who have faced higher-tier specimens describe an unsettling awareness in their gaze, something that evaluates distance, angle, and the likelihood of a successful strike before committing.

Biological Traits

Cannibalism is the baseline: every carnivorous critter at every tier can consume flesh, which drives both their feeding behavior and their ability to recover from damage at higher tiers through the Consume Flesh ability. Spike Damage on brawling strikes scales through the tiers, and Abduct (the ability to grab and carry off a target) appears as early as Hazard tier.
The mid-tier abilities focus on pursuit and isolation. Awareness detects concealed targets. Agile Movement provides rapid repositioning. Bleeding Mark tags a target for ongoing damage, making escape a deteriorating proposition. Ground and Pound pins downed targets. At the highest tiers, Murder provides instant-kill capability, Torn Asunder destroys targets beyond recovery, and Gulp allows the creature to swallow prey outright. The Apocalyptic-tier Area of Effect variants of Bleeding Mark and No Escape turn the creature's hunting ground into a closed arena where retreat is not an option.
Defensively, carnivorous critters are glass cannons until Tier 4, when Sturdy Critter finally appears. They have no armor, no damage reduction, and no ranged defense at any tier. The strategy for survivors is simple in theory: hit hard, hit fast, do not let it grab you.

Behaviour

The behavior is uncomplicated: hunt, catch, consume. Carnivorous critters do not hesitate once they identify prey. Lower-tier specimens attack with straightforward aggression, closing distance and biting with single-minded focus. They lack subtlety, but the ferocity of the initial charge compensates. Even a Nuisance-tier carnivore can take an unprepared survivor off their feet.
At Menace tier, the hunting behavior gains sophistication. Awareness allows the creature to detect hidden or concealed targets, eliminating one of the most reliable survival strategies against predators. The creature begins to use Consume Flesh mid-fight, tearing into downed targets to restore its own health while the rest of the group scrambles to respond. At Catastrophic tier, Abduct becomes a primary tactic: the creature seizes an individual, drags them from the group, and processes them in isolation. Death Stalk ensures that fleeing only delays the inevitable. The Apocalyptic tier is functionally a siege: the creature locks down a kill zone with No Escape, devours targets with Gulp, and uses Torn Asunder to ensure nothing it catches survives intact.
