Downtown Vestige Islet
Downtown Vestige occupies the walled island between the Penrose and Kueh canals, and it is the home-life core of the Holy City. If the Empyrean gathers sacred authority, this islet gathers sacred routine. More than a hundred Nuclear Family compounds crowd its blocks, holding thousands of lives in overlapping kinships: those born to a line beside the adopted, elders beside newcomers, long inheritances beside people only lately taken in by rite and service. The island stands as the Nuclear Family's working proof of what it believes the world can still become.
The streets are narrower and far more alive than the ceremonial roads near the Empyrean, strung with laundry lines, hand-lettered signs, herb boxes, and drying nets. Its commercial spine, Main Street, runs the length of the island like a shared artery, crowded with repair houses and gun stores, tea rooms and family kitchens, fishmongers, bakeries, and storefront workshops. The homes sit low and broad, turned inward around courtyards, blank and thick-walled toward the street with the family's ancestral names posted out front, yet vivid within: painted plaster, carved lintels, ancestor markers, and hand-made icons of Founders kept as members of the line who happen to be dead. Craft lanes belong to weavers and potters, jewelers and toolsmiths, and those who restore instruments. Along the canal rim, purification houses guard the water while docks, net houses, and smoke sheds work the fishing edge, and cut inlets spin turbines and waterwheels for milling grain and working cotton.
The island is governed by the Nuclear Family and guarded by the Community Watch. Everyone able is expected to take up arms for their home, and the district keeps a standing force besides; its defenders understand that to shield Downtown Vestige is to shield its kitchens and children, its records and gardens, its graves, all in the same breath. That vigilance runs alongside a hardened view of the neighbors. The island distrusts the Stack as a place that trusts the deal over the community, and it watches Harbormarch with a sadder wariness, convinced the labor engine to the south has begun to mistake efficiency for love. A raider rowing in may see only low roofs and garden plots and read them as weakness. The island counts that mistake among its better defenses.
