Harrah's Gate

Harrah's Gate straddles the slim land-bridge where the island meets the mainland, the single overland route into Brigands Growyards. It was built onto the skeleton of a former resort, since gutted, hardened, and enlarged into a fortress checkpoint where control matters far more than comfort. The old hotel towers serve as watch posts now, their windows cut down to firing slits behind layered steel-backed glass, watching the road, the span, and the water on both sides.
  Nothing crosses easily. The bridge has been rebuilt as a chokepoint rather than a simple crossing, its roadway broken into segments that can be raised, dropped, or blown apart, its surface switching between asphalt, concrete, and steel plate so that no vehicle passes unheard. The approach crawls through concrete blocks, angled rails, and staggered lanes seeded with recessed spikes. Beyond it, a tiered intake separates vehicles from foot traffic, tallies counts, checks permits, and inspects cargo before anyone moves deeper. Inside, the Gate becomes a marketplace without ever dropping its guard: long reinforced bays sorted by produce, lumber, and processed goods, buyers herded along fixed routes past checkpoints where every deal is watched and logged. Beet shipments get special attention, their sugary smell heaviest near the stations where the first steps of brewing alcohol begin before the crop even leaves the building.
  Past the market, the structure runs on into restricted corridors closed to ordinary people, all locked doors and coded access, from which the operations of the Growyards are managed at a distance. That reach is why Harrah's Gate holds a seat on the Board of Representatives. Whoever controls the Gate controls the food and raw materials the whole region depends on, and the Merican Financial Institute, with its own presence inside the Growyards, keeps the Gate's accounting wired into the larger machine of the Stack.
