Leather Back Raiders

Other raider clans have tried to ride Bull Gators. Dozens have died in the attempt. The Leather Back Raiders are the only tribe that cracked the problem, and their method is equal parts patience and theft.
They steal young gators from clutches shortly after hatching, spiriting the hatchlings back to their swamp communities before the mother can respond. The young are raised from birth alongside the tribe, conditioned through repeated training gestures until the wild instinct to attack anything that moves is replaced with loyalty to a specific rider. The process takes time and still carries risk, but the result is a mounted raider on a twelve-foot armored combat platform that no other force in the Rum Coast can match.
Leather Backs raid settlements for food, splitting the take equally between riders and mounts. The gators are treated as full members of the tribe, fed alongside everyone else, and the bond between rider and animal runs deep enough that killing the rider makes the situation worse. A dismounted Leather Back's gator fights with redoubled ferocity to defend its fallen partner, becoming more dangerous the moment the rider goes down. Armed with sharpened wooden poles and simple clubs, the riders themselves are unremarkable fighters. The gator underneath them is the weapon, and the partnership is what makes the Leather Backs the most feared mounted force in the swamps.
