L.I.D. Laughing in the Dark
L.I.D., Laughing in the Dark, is one of the largest gangs in the Brokelands. Originating from Coney Island, they have spread across the southern and central Brokelands through chaotic bull-rush combat tactics and a reputation for sadistic territorial enforcement. Their fighters pile into salvaged vehicles loaded with blaring music and charge enemy positions in waves of noise and violence. Bodies found at the edges of their territory are left with noses removed, a signature warning that needs no translation.
The gang is ruled by a King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, titles held through aggression, intelligence, and the constant vigilance required to survive assassination attempts from internal challengers. Each ruler is protected by six personal guards called Carnies, bound to die with their regent if the throne falls. The name of the gang itself comes from its first Queen Mermaid, who was driven to instability by the relentless attempts on her life and would alternate between sobbing and insane laughter when left alone in the dark.
Beneath the south end of Throg's End bridge, the L.I.D. representative Jonah Nails operates a gun-running and contract brokerage with ten shock troops at his back. This is where most outsiders conduct business with the gang, preferring the shadow of the bridge to the alternative of entering L.I.D. territory proper. The gang hires out for any job regardless of its nature, and their red-and-white striped clothing and laughing clown face insignia have become synonymous with the kind of work that respectable outfits refuse.
