Nathaniel Carmichael

Nathaniel Carmichael was a preacher from old Baytowne who studied with the sages of the Yard and left with something more useful than theology: blueprints for water purifiers, crop rotation schedules, medical techniques that could be taught to anyone willing to learn, and a conviction that the wasteland needed roads more than it needed prayers.
He compiled these into a settlers' survival guide, a growing manual that each recipient was expected to expand and pass forward. Then he led a great westward convoy from the Nor'East, bringing five students with instructions that defined everything the Lamplighters would become. When the convoy encountered fertile land or useful ruins, a student would break away to help establish a settlement, and each of those students was tasked with taking five of their own. The mathematics of the arrangement were deliberate: one becomes five, five become twenty-five, and the network proliferates like lantern light spreading from a single flame.
Carmichael's own journey ended at Mountain Refuge, a sleepy settlement in the great mountains east of the Rust Coast. Whether he lived out his days there or moved on is not recorded. What is recorded is the result of his model: a proliferating network of settlements connected by the roads and knowledge that his students and their students built, spreading across the continent from the Nor'East to the far coasts.
He aimed to build a road from coast to coast. What he built was a tradition.

Personal history

Nathaniel Carmichael studied with the sages of the Yard in old Baytowne, collecting blueprints for water purifiers, crop rotation schedules, and medical techniques that formed the basis of the settlers' survival guide he compiled for his mission. The guide was designed to grow: each recipient was expected to add to it and pass it forward, creating a living document that would accumulate practical knowledge with every new settlement.
He led a great westward convoy from the Nor'East, accompanied by five students. Each student was tasked with breaking away from the convoy when fertile land or useful ruins were found, establishing a settlement and then taking five students of their own to continue the pattern. This proliferating model became the defining structure of the Lamplighters sect within the Sainthood of Ashes.
Carmichael's final destination was Mountain Refuge, a settlement in the great mountains east of the Rust Coast. His fate beyond that arrival is not recorded. The network he set in motion, however, continued to expand. His five students produced twenty-five, and those produced more, establishing a web of settlements and roads that stretched from the Nor'East toward the far coasts. The Lamplighters tradition he founded persists, carrying his model forward long after the man himself passed from record.
Founding missionary of the Lamplighters; led the great westward convoy that seeded settlements across the continent.
