The post-apocalyptic science of working with the Infection, death, and the Mortis Amaranthine

There is one piece of technology in the wasteland that has caused post-apocalyptic society to leap beyond the baseline of its era. Not the diesel engine, not the telegraph, not the crude assembly-line forges that settlements depend on for day-to-day survival. Those all sit within the early industrial revolution range that defines the setting's standard crafting: steam power, simple metallurgy, inefficient combustion engines, and incandescent lamps at the high end. Necrology is the exception. It is the single discipline that pushed the technological ceiling higher, and it did so by going through death rather than around it.
  Necrology is the science of studying and manipulating the Infection and the Mortis Amaranthine. It is explicitly and emphatically a science, not magic, not mysticism, not supernatural hand-waving. Its practitioners describe it as a combination of Infection Sciences and Bio-Infection hacking: a biologically driven discipline that merges Infection-based biology with mechanical components. The results are intentionally grotesque. Organic matter fused with crude machinery, functional automations built from biomass and rudimentary engineering. The literary ancestors are apparent; there is Frankenstein in its ambition, Herbert West in its willingness to transgress, and grindhouse horror in its aesthetics. Necrology does not aim for elegance. It aims for function, and it achieves it through means that most people would rather not examine too closely.
  The discipline divides into three branches. Mechanical Necrology involves building items within the Mortis at Necrology stations. Everything produced is made of biological matter: fungal network communication systems, Morgues, large-scale building projects. A Necrologist can create a mycelium network that functions as a telegraph system, but never a computer made of biological material. The technology ceiling remains firmly tethered to the base mechanical science of the setting, even when the materials are alive. And all of it falls apart over time, because organic matter does what organic matter does.
  Medicinal Necrology is the art of creating brews and tinctures that affect the body. Using Necrology resources to produce drugs and medicines that interact with Strain biology, its practitioners are normally masters of culinary arts. The Gravenauts and Corpse Whisperers who practice this discipline occupy a space between apothecary and alchemist, working with materials that most people would not willingly put in their bodies.
  Procedural Necrology is the most demanding of the three. It involves performing procedures directly on Strains, with effects that vary depending on the practitioner's skill and the subject's biology. It requires a near-perfect understanding of how bodies work across all Strains, knowledge that can only be gained through dissection. The Graverobbers who practice this discipline are as much anatomists as they are scientists, and their work carries the weight of every body they have opened to learn from.
  The discipline demands an extraordinary breadth of expertise. A Mortis Practitioner must master both medicine and the culinary arts before they can begin their real work: producing the Mortuary Morsels that are the sole method for recovering Resolve, conducting the Living Experiments that guide patients through Grave Dives, and crafting NecroScience Technology from blueprints that no ordinary artisan can replicate. Corpse Harvesters, who approach from the other side of the discipline, combine criminal expertise with agricultural knowledge to extract resources from the boundary between life and death: Festering Crystals, Mycelium Wiring, Mortis Extract, Grave Flesh, and Imprint Crystals. These materials, all of them drawn from the Mortis Amaranthine, are among the rarest and most sought-after trade goods in the wasteland.
  Necrology materials are extraordinarily difficult to produce, requiring specialized knowledge, rare resources, and multiple skilled practitioners working in concert. There are no shortcuts. No amount of wealth, influence, or territorial authority can substitute for the expertise and materials the discipline demands. Many finished items are bound to the practitioner who created them, inseparable from the hands and mind that shaped them. A single project may consume multiple rare resources and require the coordinated effort of several specialists, each contributing knowledge the others lack. The scarcity is not bureaucratic; it reflects the genuine danger and rarity of working with the boundary between life and death.
  The work is not safe. Grave Dives are governed by uncertainty; outcomes range from successful Infection recovery to the loss of additional Infection on a bad result. The presence of Aberrant forces during procedures worsens the odds for everyone involved. Necrology devices, once crafted, cannot be repaired by standard artisan methods and require their own specialized maintenance. And the annual cap of six recovered Infection points per person means that even the best practitioner cannot fully undo the accumulated toll of a dangerous life. Necrology is not intended for combat use or routine equipment. It occupies its own niche: rare, vital, collaborative, and irreplaceable. It does not cheat death. It negotiates with it, carefully and at great cost, in the thin space where the fungal network meets the living world.
