Psionic Critter

The crystalline growths are the first sign. They protrude from the creature's skull and along its spine, catching light in ways that organic tissue should not. They pulse faintly when the creature focuses, and by the time you notice the pressure building behind your own eyes, the attack has already begun. Psionic critters do not need to touch you. They reach into the mind directly, and what they do there is worse than anything teeth or claws could accomplish.
All Psionic critters count as Aberrant, a classification that places them among the wasteland's most anomalous threats. Their abilities are psychic in nature: pyrokinetic blasts that burn without flame, forced betrayal that turns allies against each other, delusions that rewrite what a target perceives, and paralysis that locks the body while the mind screams. These are not instinctual attacks. Even at lower tiers, there is a predatory cunning to the way a psionic critter selects and disables targets, picking apart group cohesion with surgical precision before closing for the kill.
At Nuisance and Hazard tiers, the threat is limited to Pyrokinetics: direct psychic damage at range. Painful, but survivable. The real danger begins at Menace tier, when Betrayal, Delusions, and Paralysis enter the creature's repertoire alongside Mental Armor. A Menace-tier psionic critter can turn one ally against the group, make another see things that are not there, freeze a third in place, and defend itself against mental counterattack, all without taking a single physical step forward.
Catastrophic tier is where the psionic critter becomes a force multiplier. Attract Aberrants draws other aberrant creatures to the psionic critter's location, creating a nexus of psychic and physical threats. Friend of Zombie or Friend of Raider adds yet another layer of allied forces. Sturdy Critter provides physical resilience. By Apocalyptic tier, ten uses each of Betrayal and Paralysis, Living Horror, Melee Damage Reduction, and Critter High Threat Immunities produce a creature that disassembles groups psychically while being extraordinarily difficult to bring down physically. The math is not in the survivors' favor, and the creature knows it.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The crystalline structures are the defining anatomical feature, and they are unlike anything else found on wasteland fauna. They grow near the head and along the spine, protruding through the skin in clusters that range from small, translucent nubs on lower-tier specimens to large, faceted formations on Catastrophic and Apocalyptic variants. The material is neither bone nor mineral; it catches light with an internal luminescence and appears to vibrate faintly when the creature is agitated or focusing its abilities.
Beneath the crystals, the creature's body is unremarkable by critter standards. The musculature is average, the build neither particularly robust nor lean. Physical strength is clearly not the priority. The eyes, however, are distinctive: alert, tracking, evaluating. Survivors who have faced psionic critters describe the unsettling sense of being studied, as though the creature is cataloguing vulnerabilities before it acts. The overall impression is of something that has traded physical development for mental capability, and made the better bargain.

Biological Traits

Pyrokinetics is the baseline ranged psychic attack, available at all tiers and scaling from two uses at Nuisance to ten at Apocalyptic. Betrayal (Menace through Apocalyptic, scaling from one to ten uses) forces a target to attack their allies. Paralysis (same tier range, one to ten uses) immobilizes targets entirely. Delusions (one to five uses) warps perception. Aberrant Suffering inflicts direct psychic pain. Living Horror at Tier 5 represents the pinnacle of psychic terror.
Blood Scent at Catastrophic tier tracks wounded targets, and Attract Aberrants (one to two uses) summons other aberrant creatures to the psionic critter's location, compounding the encounter's difficulty. Friend of Zombie or Friend of Raider provides factional allies.
Defensively, psionic critters start weak. No armor or protection appears until Mental Armor at Menace tier. Sturdy Critter arrives at Catastrophic, and Melee Damage Reduction plus Critter High Threat Immunities appear only at Apocalyptic. The creature has no Natural Armor at any tier. The counter is clear: physical aggression at lower tiers, before the defensive suite catches up to the psychic offense. Mental Endurance is critical at all tiers, as it resists Betrayal and several other psionic abilities directly.

Behaviour

Psionic critters hunt with their minds first and their bodies second. At lower tiers, they maintain distance and apply Pyrokinetics, burning targets at range without exposing themselves to physical retaliation. The behavior is cautious, calculated, and distinctly different from the instinct-driven aggression of most critter scope types.
At Menace tier and above, the hunting pattern becomes genuinely tactical. The creature identifies the most dangerous target in a group and applies Betrayal to turn them against their allies. It uses Paralysis to lock down support fighters. Delusions disorient scouts and lookouts. The psionic critter does not charge into a group; it dismantles the group from within, targeting the bonds of trust and coordination that keep survivors alive.
The Attract Aberrants ability at Catastrophic tier transforms the creature from a solo threat into a nexus. Other aberrant creatures in the area gravitate toward the psionic critter's location, drawn by whatever psychic signal it broadcasts. Combined with Friend of Zombie or Friend of Raider, this means the psionic critter's territory becomes a convergence point for multiple threat types. Engaging one requires preparing for all of them.
