Through their flaws and inevitable downfalls, villains illuminate the virtues of the heroic path. The Rire Macabre makes this lesson tangible by taking on the roles of those antagonists in ritualized plays, debates, and philosophical challenges, giving the faithful a living adversary to symbolically confront and triumph over.
Members, known as Dark Advocates, understand that their purpose is fulfilled in their defeat. The highest aspiration for many within the Rire Macabre is to fall before a true hero ascendant, a moment that represents both the villain's sacred function and the faithful's spiritual growth. They are the literal devil's advocates of the Telling Visionaries, necessary adversaries whose opposition strengthens the community they serve.
The Rire Macabre is not without controversy. During their rise, a fracture within the faith produced the Cult of the Scourge, a splinter group that rejected the Rire Macabre's structured approach to villainy in favor of genuine chaos and destruction. The Cult of the Scourge exists entirely outside the Telling Visionaries faith, but the ideological schism remains a sore point. Their symbol, a variant of the traditional drama and comedy mask with one face replaced by rage, captures the subsect's complex relationship with antagonism: for some, life is a violent drama shaped by the Signal's will; for others, it is a vicious joke to be grimly laughed at.
