Slurry

For most of the year, Slurry is nothing. A skeleton crew of Reclaimers maintains the structures, patches the roofs, and waits. The buildings stand empty. The arena collects rainwater and rust. The market stalls gather dust. Then winter descends, the roads freeze to impassable sheets, and the Diesel Jocks come roaring in from every direction with machines that need repair and riders who need somewhere to spend the cold months that is not the inside of a cab.
Slurry during "the season" is a different settlement entirely. The Plaza, a war-torn building reinforced with wood planks and decorated with the clan signs of every Diesel Jock outfit that has ever wintered here, transforms into a massive indoor market. Colorful stalls fill the interior. Merchants deal everything from maple syrup to drugs to mechanical parts while DJ clans rotate guard duty, identifiable by white gear insignia. The atmosphere tilts toward festival: loud, commercial, and aggressive in the way that trade conducted by people who spend their lives on the road tends to be.
Cloverdale is where the real entertainment happens. The arena is a cleared stretch of dirt littered with blood and the twisted metal remains of rides that did not survive the impact. When one Diesel Jock challenges another, they meet at Cloverdale, line up on opposite ends with engines roaring, and tear toward each other at frightening speeds. The only rule is to stay on your ride. A gambling ring has grown around the fights, and the odds shift with every crash. The stands fill with spectators who understand that watching two armored vehicles collide head-on is both the most honest and most dangerous entertainment available in the wastes.
Outside the seasonal chaos, Potter's Field endures. A stretch of carefully cleared farmland on the permanent edge of town, it is home to a Genjian farming compound that produces the most productive crops in the region. The Planters use pre-Fall technology to breed new strains, and their work extends beyond food. Medicinal compounds, and (if the rumors hold) poisons and pharmaceuticals, grow alongside the root vegetables. Diesel Jocks hire on to ship Potter's Field produce to other cities, which means the one thing Slurry exports year-round is food grown by people who never leave.
The Reapers, led by Ricky Van, wear dark jackets bearing a skull holding a scythe and hold guard contracts stretching from Oilberta to the Burning City. The Silver Strikes specialize in custom ride parts and weapons, selling to all comers and fueling an arms race among the clans. When the snow melts and the roads clear, the riders refit their machines for dry ground and leave. Slurry empties. The Reclaimers sweep out the mess and start waiting again.

History

Slurry exists because winter exists. Diesel Jock gangs realized early that the frozen months made travel impossible and machines vulnerable. Rides needed repair. Riders needed shelter. The location offered enough existing structures to serve as a waypoint, and pragmatism did the rest. Gangs that spent the warmer months competing on the open road needed somewhere to park when the roads disappeared under ice and snow. Slurry became that place, and the seasonal rhythm defined everything that followed.
The Genjian arrived separately. Potter's Field was a farming operation before it was part of Slurry, and the Planters established their compound on the permanent edge of town where the soil could be worked year-round. Their pre-Fall agricultural technology produced yields that outstripped anything else in the region, and the Diesel Jocks who wintered nearby provided a ready labor force for shipping the harvest. The arrangement benefited both sides: the Planters gained distribution, and the Jocks gained reliable food supplies for the road.
The settlement never developed a formal government because it never needed one. The population cycles completely each year. The clans that arrive in winter bring their own hierarchies, enforce their own disputes at Cloverdale, and leave when the thaw comes. The Reclaimers who stay behind maintain the infrastructure without claiming authority over it. Slurry is less a settlement than a recurring event, and its history is measured not in generations of residents but in seasons of visitors.
