Spore-Sickness
The cure for the wasteland carries a plague inside it.
Spore-Sickness is a five-stage fungal disease caused by ingesting Glow-Shrooms in any form: eating, brewing, cooking, smoking, or inserting. The method of preparation does not matter. If Liberum Radicalis enters the body, the spores go with it. They settle. They wait. Months after initial exposure, latent spores activate and begin the slow work of colonizing their host from within.
The progression is methodical and merciless. Stage 1 presents as mild fatigue and respiratory issues, indistinguishable from a dozen common wasteland ailments. Stage 2 brings irritation and glowing lesions on the skin, the first visible evidence of fungal colonization spreading beneath the surface. By Stage 3, the spores have reached neurological function: hallucinations set in, behavior turns erratic, and the afflicted begin losing their grip on what is real. Stage 4 announces itself with mushroom-like fungal growths erupting from the body alongside significant physical impairment. Stage 5 is death, accompanied by a loss of Infection that cannot be mitigated by any means.
Death does not end it. Upon return to play after the Stage 5 death scene, the afflicted returns at Stage 1. The cycle restarts.
The disease becomes contagious at advanced stages. At Stage 4, entering the Mortis exposes anyone present to Stage 1 Spore-Sickness. At Stage 5, the death spreads Stage 1 to anyone entering the Mortis or Morgue for the following hour. The afflicted become vectors, and quarantine decisions carry the weight of life and death for those around them.
Treatment requires a specialist with Master Medical skill combined with knowledge from multiple lore disciplines: Lore: Mortis Amaranthine or Lore: Infection, plus Lore: Medical, plus either Lore: Mutation or Lore: Nature. The procedure involves cleaning gestating spores from the body and applying radiation treatments to neutralize remaining fungal material. Without this cross-disciplinary intervention, the disease progresses to its terminal conclusion.
Spore-Sickness presents a grim counterpoint to the Wells Society's environmental reclamation mission. The very organism used to detoxify wastelands carries a lethal disease vector if consumed, forcing communities to weigh the benefits of Glow-Shroom deployment against the risk of population exposure. The fungus that reclaims the land can destroy the people living on it.

Causes
Spore-Sickness is triggered by ingesting Glow-Shrooms (Liberum Radicalis) in any form: eating, brewing, cooking, smoking, or inserting. The method of preparation is irrelevant. Latent spores settle within the body and may activate months after initial exposure. Exposure within Spore-Field Zones of Mechanics also serves as a transmission vector. Risk factors include consuming Glow-Shroom preparations for perceived benefits and entering Spore-Field zones without adequate protection.
Symptoms
Early symptoms mimic common wasteland ailments: mild fatigue and respiratory issues that rarely raise alarm. As the disease progresses, irritation develops alongside glowing lesions on the skin, visible evidence that the fungal colonization has spread beyond the initial site. Neurological symptoms follow: hallucinations, erratic behavior, and a deteriorating ability to distinguish reality from spore-induced perception. In advanced stages, mushroom-like fungal growths erupt from the body with significant physical impairment. The terminal stage brings death with a loss of Infection that no known intervention can mitigate.
Treatment
Treatment requires Master Medical skill combined with knowledge spanning multiple disciplines: Lore: Mortis Amaranthine or Lore: Infection, plus Lore: Medical, plus either Lore: Mutation or Lore: Nature. The procedure involves cleaning gestating spores from the body and applying radiation treatments to neutralize remaining fungal material. The cross-disciplinary requirement makes this disease particularly difficult to cure; no single specialist possesses all the necessary knowledge. Collaboration between character archetypes is essential.
Prognosis
Fatal at Stage 5 if untreated. Death at Stage 5 includes Infection loss that cannot be mitigated by any means. The disease does not end with death: the afflicted returns at Stage 1 upon return to play, restarting the cycle. Without successful treatment, the progression repeats indefinitely. The contagion risk at Stages 4 and 5 (spread through the Mortis and Morgue) means that untreated cases threaten entire communities, not just the individual afflicted.
