Swarming Critter
One is a nuisance. A dozen is a problem. A hundred is a force of nature that breaks through doors, overwhelms barricades, and turns a defended position into an open grave. Swarming critters are the wasteland's lesson in arithmetic: individually negligible, collectively lethal, and terrifyingly persistent because the ones you put down get back up.
These creatures attack in overwhelming numbers. The individual specimen might be small, unimposing, the kind of thing you would swat aside without a second thought if you found just one. But swarming critters are never just one. They converge from all directions, a tide of bodies that uses sheer mass to overcome defenses that would stop any single creature cold. They work to surround targets, closing from every angle until there is nowhere to retreat, nowhere to stand that is not already occupied by teeth and claws.
Rise Again is the defining nightmare. Every swarming critter at every tier gets back up after being dropped, at least twice. Higher-tier swarms rise four times per individual, meaning each creature in the swarm requires five separate kills to put down permanently. Multiply that by the number of bodies in the swarm and the math becomes the kind of problem that depletes ammunition, exhausts melee fighters, and breaks defensive lines through pure attrition. Swarm Break Door ensures that barricading is a delay, not a solution. These creatures will dismantle physical barriers through persistent pressure, given enough time and enough bodies.
At lower tiers, the swarm is manageable with area-of-effect tactics and ranged weapons (no Ranged Damage Reduction at any tier, which is the swarm's most exploitable weakness). By Menace tier, Blinding Pestilence and five uses of Takedown add crowd control. Catastrophic tier adds Stampede, Teed Off, Melee Damage Reduction, and Friend of Raider, meaning the swarm may be driven or directed by Raider factions as a living weapon. The Apocalyptic tier layers on Critter High Threat Immunities, Absorb, and Delusions, transforming the swarm from a physical threat into something that corrupts the senses while it crushes the body. Area-of-effect damage remains the best counter. Without it, the numbers win.

Basic Information
Anatomy
Individual swarming critters are unremarkable. Small, compact bodies built more for speed and coordination than for individual power. The musculature is minimal. The teeth and claws are functional but lack the specialized killing adaptations of carnivorous or armored variants. Nothing about a single specimen suggests a threat worth worrying about.
The swarm is the organism. When multiple specimens move together, the collective mass becomes the defining physical feature: a shifting, surging wave of bodies that fills corridors, spills over barricades, and covers ground in every direction simultaneously. Individual creatures within the swarm show minimal independent behavior; they move as a collective, responding to the same stimuli and converging on the same targets. The visual impression is of something organic and fluid, a living current that flows around obstacles and seeks the path of least resistance toward prey.

Biological Traits
Rise Again is the cornerstone, present at every tier. At Tiers 1-2, each creature rises twice. At Tiers 3-5, this increases to four times, meaning each individual in the swarm must be killed five times to be permanently eliminated. Combined with Cannibalism (present at all tiers), the swarm sustains itself by feeding on anything it drops.
Swarm Break Door (all tiers, scaling from one to two uses) allows the swarm to dismantle physical barriers, ensuring that barricading against a swarm is a delaying tactic rather than a defense. Takedown (Hazard through Apocalyptic) drops targets to the ground where the swarm can pile on. Blinding Pestilence (Menace through Apocalyptic) obscures vision. Stampede (Catastrophic and Apocalyptic) delivers mass-charge damage. Teed Off (Catastrophic and Apocalyptic) adds powerful strikes. At Apocalyptic tier, Delusions disrupts perception and Absorb drains health from targets.
Melee Damage Reduction at Catastrophic tier and above makes close-quarters combat more difficult, but the swarm has no Ranged Damage Reduction at any tier. This is the primary tactical exploit: ranged area-of-effect attacks are the most efficient way to thin the swarm before it closes. Critter High Threat Immunities at Apocalyptic protect against status effects, and no tier grants armor, Natural Armor, or Mental Armor. The swarm's defense is volume, not resilience.

Behaviour
The swarm does not think. Individual creatures show minimal intelligence, driven by instinct to converge, consume, and persist. The tactical effectiveness is emergent: each creature moves independently toward the same target, and the result is an encirclement that tightens from every direction without any individual member planning it. The collective pressure is the strategy, even though no individual is capable of having one.
Cannibalism drives the swarm's self-sustaining behavior. Creatures within the swarm consume fallen prey (including downed survivors) to fuel their continued activity. Rise Again ensures that dropped swarm members return to the fight, creating a cycle of falling and rising that exhausts defenders. Swarm Break Door provides the ability to dismantle physical barriers, meaning fortification is a temporary measure at best.
At higher tiers, the swarm gains directed capability through external alliance. Friend of Raider at Catastrophic tier indicates that Raider factions may herd, drive, or weaponize swarms against settlements. The swarm itself does not coordinate with Raiders deliberately, but the effect is the same: a living siege weapon that absorbs defensive resources while organized hostiles exploit the chaos. Stampede at Catastrophic tier adds a charging mass attack, and Blinding Pestilence at Menace tier and above obscures the targets' vision, making it harder to prioritize threats or find exits.
