The Fork
The Fork was a bustling crossroads town living on borrowed time. Located approximately halfway between Lakehead and Tohr in Homeland, the settlement served as a popular stopover for traveling merchants and caravaneers during the Ironworks era. Regular trade festivals brought goods from across the region: fur and weapons from Natural Ones to the north, arms and machinery from the Ironworks, food and drink from nearby farms, and Still District booze routed south toward the empire.
Several Rover caravanserai made their homes at the Fork, and the crossroads hummed with the energy of a place where every road converged. Rivers and wetlands surrounded the town, haunted by deadly River Hunter Zed, but the town militia kept the main roads secure enough for trade.
The settlement's deeper anxiety lay in its past. The Fork had once been a rail hub, and that infrastructure, even carefully scrapped and sabotaged, made it an obvious first target if the Ironworks launched another large-scale incursion into Homeland. The population lived under persistent fear that the empire would come for the rail lines, and that the Fork would be overrun before Lakehead or Tohr could respond. The careful sabotage of the tracks bought time, but everyone knew it was not a permanent solution. Where fur traders from the north met Ironworks arms dealers, and everyone pretended it was just business, the Fork existed in a space between commerce and conflict, hoping that trade would continue to be more profitable than war.

History
The Fork developed as a natural crossroads in Homeland, its position between Lakehead and Tohr making it an ideal stopover for merchants and caravaneers. The settlement had once served as a rail hub, connecting Homeland to the broader transportation network. As the Ironworks expanded, the Reclaimers carefully scrapped and sabotaged the rail lines leading to the Fork, removing the infrastructure that would make a large-scale incursion too easy. Trade festivals and Rover caravanserai kept the town economically vital, but the fear of an Ironworks advance never fully subsided. The Fork existed in uneasy balance, its commerce valuable to both sides of the conflict, its former rail connections a vulnerability that no amount of sabotage could entirely erase.
Geography
The Fork sat at the confluence of rivers and wetlands in Homeland, roughly halfway between Lakehead and Tohr. The surrounding waterways gave the town its name but also harbored deadly River Hunter Zed. The settlement's former rail hub infrastructure, though carefully scrapped and sabotaged, remained a source of strategic concern. Trade routes converged here, making the Fork a natural stopover for caravans traveling between the northern settlements. Still District booze from Tohr was routed through the Fork on its way south to Wins and the Ironworks.
