The Garden Riseway

The Garden Riseway was a crumbling concrete road bridge that arched up through and over the remains of Tohr, providing the most obvious entrance into the plague-stricken city. During the Ironworks era, the Riseway appeared to be the safest way in, rising high above the milling throngs of zed below. From its elevated vantage, a traveler could see the Spire, the burnt-out cupola of the Still District, and the old city spread out in light that could, if one squinted, make the plagued crowds below look like regular foot traffic.
The appearance of safety was carefully maintained and carefully weaponized. A hidden sniper nest in a burnt-out high-rise beside the Riseway kept the route defended against unfriendly incursion. Only those who knew the correct pennants and lantern signals were allowed to pass further into the city. Messengers and Reclaimer operatives used the Riseway to move into and out of Tohr, while anyone approaching without the proper identification risked having their approach ended by a bullet they never heard coming.
The bridge itself was crumbling, its concrete cracked and weathered by years of neglect and the weight of the apocalypse. It served as the gateway to a city being slowly reclaimed from the dead, the first sight of Tohr for anyone brave or desperate enough to enter.
