The Man in the Hat
About a quarter mile from May Cape's town center, deep in a knotted swamp of ruined houses, stands a well-kept Victorian home with an inviting front porch. The interior is a reliquary of wall-to-wall pre-fall artifacts and historical detritus, items spilling out onto the porch where the Man in the Hat can usually be found listening to his prize possession: a still-functional Victrola 78 record player. He appears to be in later middle age, dresses casually, never carries a weapon, and has never been seen without his white straw hat.
No one knows his name. Locals say he has dropped tidbits indicating he is far older than he looks and may remember critical details about what happened to create the post-fall world. He seems to have been a scientist, with deep knowledge of genetics, physics, and chemistry. He will never openly discuss what he knows, but people come from all over the world for an audience to ask him questions he does not always deem fit to answer. On the rare occasions he has left his house, it was to offer critical information that literally saved the entire settlement. There is a rumor among locals that no zombie will attack him. There is no one in May Cape who would not die for him.
