The Rim Watch

Every family on the Rim gives one of their own each month. That is the price of living on the fertile farmlands of I-Die-Low, where the forests at the edge of the cleared land harbor creatures that wander out seeking food and water, especially when the dry season bakes the tree line.
The Rim Watch is a rotating militia organized by family obligation rather than military command. Each month, every family in the Rim nominates one member for thirty days of service. The toughest are typically chosen. There is no single commander; the Watch is coordinated collectively, with families communicating through mounted messengers when threats emerge.
Watchers patrol the perimeter on horseback, riding circuits across the extensive farmlands. When a family reports danger, the nearest riders respond. The scale of response depends on the threat: a lone creature wandering out of the tree line might require two riders, while a pack drawn by drought could demand the entire Watch and its secondary reserve. Proactive patrols along the forest edge deter or eliminate most threats before they reach the farms.
The system works, but it has limits. The Rim covers an enormous amount of territory, and sometimes the Watch simply cannot reach a farm in time. When a threat exceeds their capacity, families lose crops, livestock, and occasionally people. The rotation ensures the burden is shared, but the burden itself grows heavier each season as the creatures grow bolder and the forests creep closer.
