The Shattered Coast

The San Andreas fault did not merely crack the western coastline. It shattered it. When the Fall brought military bombardment down on the coast, the fault lines split wide, volcanic eruptions tore through the broken earth, and the ocean rushed inland through fractures that had been dry land for millennia. What remained of pre-Fall California became a jagged, broken thing: a chain of islands where continuous coast once stood, a ruined mega-city clinging to craggy rocks where the water met the rubble, and a shattered shoreline running from the Jungle of Saint Diego in the south to the fog-shrouded reaches of Frisky City in the north.
The Shattered Coast is not one place. It is a collection of territories bound together by geography and the shared misery of surviving on land that never stopped trying to kill its inhabitants. Harsh sun and brutal ultraviolet radiation punish anyone who works the surface. Fresh water is scarce, contested, and frequently adulterated by those who control its distribution. Seismic activity continues; the ground shakes often enough that the sound of collapsing masonry has become background noise to those who have lived here long enough to stop flinching.
On the mainland, the City of Lost Angels sprawls across the ruins of pre-Fall Los Angeles. The Inner City is a block-by-block warzone where gangs fight over rubble and the undead wander between the contested zones. Wetside, built on a collapsed eight-lane freeway, runs on dockside commerce and the patronage of whoever controls the port. The Hills rise above it all, a walled Pure Blood compound of silver towers, air conditioning, and automated turrets where the Fortune 50 families play a ranked game of wealth, depravity, and murder behind walls that keep the wasteland at arm's length.
Offshore, the Sans Califia Archipelago stretches across the broken water: dozens of islands, each with its own culture, dangers, and claims to territory. Frisky City sits above the clouds, maintained by slave labor. The Lost Island of Holy Wood draws pilgrims of the Church of the Telling Visions, though few find it and fewer return. Pirates hunt the straits, academics study radiation on a crescent-shaped island that kills casual visitors, and mega-condors circle a reef held by an Accensorite war tribe that has bonded with the massive birds.
The Shattered Coast is a place where Pure Bloods rule from towers while gangs fight in the rubble below, where pilgrims seek holy ground on islands surrounded by toxic water, and where every community has learned the same hard lesson: the ground here is not finished moving, and neither are the people who claim it.

Geography

The Shattered Coast encompasses the pre-Fall regions of San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, though those names carry little meaning now. The San Andreas fault split the land during the Fall, and the military bombardment of the coastline triggered volcanic eruptions that further reshaped the terrain. The ocean rushed inland through the fractured earth, creating bays, inlets, and island chains where continuous land once existed. The result is a coastline that does not so much end at the water as dissolve into it: jagged cliffs dropping into surf, sunken roadways visible beneath the tide, volcanic rock formations jutting from the water where neighborhoods once stood.
The southern reaches bake under relentless heat. The Jungle of Saint Diego marks the southern extreme, tribal Solestro territory where the Citadel of the Iron Jungle and the Balboa family's animal observatory occupy land that has gone wild in ways the pre-Fall world never anticipated. Moving north along the broken coast, the ruins of Lost Angels sprawl across the mainland, the largest settlement in the region and a city defined by the three-way tension between gang-controlled rubble, flooded docklands, and walled Pure Blood luxury.
Offshore, the Sans Califia Archipelago stretches from the southern islands to the fog-shrouded north. Navigation between islands is hazardous; strong currents, submerged ruins, and toxic stretches such as the Salton Sea make inter-island travel a gamble that not every sailor wins. The northern reaches are dominated by fog banks that roll through the island chain, and Frisky City rises above the cloud line where the Pure Blood Union of Cloud City maintains its grip on the high ground.
Seismic activity has not stopped. The ground shakes, cliffs collapse into the ocean, and the coastline continues to reshape itself. Survivors on the Shattered Coast do not build for permanence. They build for the next quake.
