The Whispers
At first it sounds like static. A low hum near the morgue, a faint buzz when passing through areas thick with Infection. Most people never notice the signal. It has always been there, the ambient communication carried between all Infection-bearing life, a biological murmur too quiet for conscious minds to register. The Whispers is what happens when your brain starts listening.
The disease is cranial, not psionic. The Infection inside the body begins to synchronize with that ambient signal, interpreting the noise as thought. Those affected hear faint, unintelligible murmurs that grow louder over time, layered with emotion rather than language. They appear distracted. They respond to voices no one else can hear. And their mind begins to crack under the weight of a conversation it was never meant to join.
Onset is linked to heavy Infection exposure, long-term necrological experimentation, or repeated contact with Aberrant entities. Extended time within Morgues or the Mortis increases the likelihood. Some Murder Inc. field weapons have been documented to induce the condition as a form of psychological warfare. The Whispers cannot be transmitted through air, touch, or proximity; it develops internally when the Infection reaches a certain threshold of environmental resonance.
What makes this disease uniquely dangerous is its relationship with Fractures. At Stage 2, entering a Morgue or Mortis space causes a Fracture directly linked to the disease's symptoms. At Stage 4, any willing expenditure of Resolve triggers a Fracture. The Whispers does not just erode the mind on its own timeline; it accelerates the accumulation of psychological damage that leads to Terminal Fracture. A person can be killed by the Whispers without ever reaching Stage 5, simply by cracking apart under the weight of too many breaks.
And dying makes it worse. Unlike nearly every other known disease, death does not reduce or cure the Whispers. It advances the disease by one stage. The usual survival strategy of dying and returning becomes the worst possible choice.
Treatment exists but demands specialized knowledge. Early stages require guided meditation using both Lore: Aberrants and Lore: Mortis Amaranthine/Infection. Mid-stage treatment involves electrochemical brain shock. Advanced cases require cranial surgery with hallucinogenic injection. Stage 5 is permanent death, equivalent to reaching five Fractures. There is no return.
The final stage is described in field reports as "quiet." Whether that means the afflicted has found peace or simply tuned in too deeply to the network to ever come back is a question no one has been able to answer, because no one has ever returned from it to explain.

A cranial disease caused by synchronization with the Infection's ambient communication signal. Causes auditory hallucinations, Fracture accumulation, and progressive mental collapse. One of the few diseases that can cause permanent character death.
Disease Type
Core Disease
Transmission
Heavy Infection exposure / Necrology
Progression Rate
Per attended game / first death
Death Effect
Advances disease (does not cure)
Terminal Stage
Permanent death (equivalent to 5 Fractures)
