Berserker Raider

The first sign is sound: guttural grunts, feral screams, the wet slap of bare feet or heavy boots coming fast across broken ground. Berserker Raiders do not announce themselves with strategy. They announce themselves with violence, and by the time you hear it, the calculation that matters (yours, not theirs) is already simple. Fight or run.
Berserkers are the blunt edge of the Aberrant Raider subspecies. Where other Raiders plot or stalk or wait, Berserkers exist in a state of permanent readiness for combat. The Infection that twisted their biology during a failed symbiotic adaptation left them with overdeveloped musculature, heightened aggression, and a violence response that has no off switch. The moment they register Lineages, rational thought drops away. What remains is a predator locked onto prey with the kind of single-minded focus that does not allow for retreat, hesitation, or self-preservation.
They attack in packs. Not coordinated squads with flanking maneuvers and fallback positions; packs, the way wolves hunt, driven by shared aggression and an instinct for targeting the vulnerable. If you are alone, they know. If you are outnumbered, they know. If you are distracted, injured, or already fighting something else, they know. The tactical awareness is primitive but effective, and it vanishes entirely once the charge begins. After that point, there is nothing behind those eyes but the need to reach you.
Despite being less numerous than the Natural Born, Berserker packs are among the most commonly encountered Raider threats near settlements. The reason is straightforward: they are willing to attack while outnumbered. Where a Natural Born warband waits for favorable odds, a Berserker pack will throw itself at a fortified position with no regard for losses. They build nests in caves and hidden areas on the wasteland fringes, and they range outward from those nests looking for food, which includes anything living. What they drag back to the nest, nobody who has seen it firsthand wants to describe twice.
The real danger is Raider Rage. A Berserker in the grip of Rage is thirty seconds of invulnerable fury: all wounds healed, all capabilities restored, and near-total immunity to everything short of an Imprint Shaker. They trigger it before you land the first blow, not after. It is not a last resort. It is an opening move.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The failed Infection adaptation that created Aberrant Raiders pushed Berserker physiology toward a single purpose: damage output. Muscle density is abnormally high, producing hulking frames with overdeveloped limbs that carry more raw strength than any unaugmented Lineage can match. Swollen veins run like cords beneath the skin, visibly pulsing with what appears to be a constant state of adrenaline overload. The body does not relax. It does not rest in any way a survivor would recognize. It simply waits in varying states of readiness for the next fight.
The skin itself has thickened into a leathery, calloused texture that functions as rudimentary natural armor. Cuts and impacts that would open a Lineage's skin simply compress against this hardened outer layer. Scars and ritualistic carvings cover what flesh is visible, etched into the skin as displays of endurance and dominance. The war masks, crafted from fabric, metal, bone, and whatever salvage is available, feature narrow eye slits and grotesque visages designed to unsettle prey.
Beneath the masks, the face carries the same overdeveloped musculature as the rest of the body. The jaw is heavy. The brow is prominent. Whatever the Infection did to these creatures during their failed adaptation, it prioritized physical combat capability above everything else, including higher cognition.

Biological Traits

Standard Berserkers carry melee weapons and brawl with raw physical power, delivering damage spikes that hit well above what their size alone would suggest. Higher-tier variants add Take Down (a destabilizing slam that stuns the target), Wall Punt (a shield-breaking knockback), and at the most dangerous ranks, Ground and Pound: a grapple-and-pummel technique that pins downed survivors while the Berserker hammers them into the dirt.
Raider Rage is the defining ability. Three uses per encounter, and the variant determines the duration and profile. Standard Rage grants thirty seconds of near-total invulnerability with a full combat refresh. Long Rage stretches to sixty seconds but leaves the Berserker vulnerable to blinding and limb crippling. Short Rage lasts only ten seconds but adds knockback immunity and clears negative conditions before the refresh, making it the most efficient reset available.
The Rank 3 tier introduces specialization that transforms Berserker packs from simple melee threats into layered combat encounters. Fixers repair weapons mid-fight. Dokters heal allied Raiders and Tainted with area-effect restoration. Infecters spread Bad Brain disease on death, turning their own destruction into a threat to anyone standing nearby. The Executer variant at Rank 3 gains Sturdy Body, making it immune to knockback, limb crippling, takedowns, and pinning, while healing one point of Body for every successful strike it lands.
Berserkers face permanent death. They are Aberrant Raiders, biologically incompatible with the Mortis Amaranthine. There is no coming back.

Behaviour

Berserker Raiders move with predatory purpose when scanning for targets: deliberate, aggressive, head turning constantly to track movement and sound. The transition from scanning to attacking is sudden and total. Once a Lineage is spotted, the Berserker charges headlong with no defensive posture, no tactical positioning, and no concern for its own survival. The violence is explosive and sustained until one combatant is dead.
They do not speak. Communication within the pack is limited to grunts, growls, and feral screams that convey aggression and direction. There is no negotiation, no warning, no attempt to intimidate before striking. The intimidation is the strike.
Pack behavior follows the standard Raider hierarchy: might makes right, and the strongest lead. Internal dominance is maintained through violence and aggressive displays. Packs return to their nests with food, living or otherwise, and the nests themselves serve as the closest thing Berserkers have to a home territory. Between hunts, the pack dynamic is one of shared violence and mutual dependence, a community built on the only thing its members understand.
