Natural One
Landsman Strain
The Natural One sitting across the fire from you noticed the branch crack forty yards out before you registered it as sound. Their eyes tracked the shift in wind direction, assessed the temperature drop, and calculated the most defensible position in the clearing while you were still reaching for your weapon. This is not vigilance. It is biology. Generations of constant survival pressure in deep wilderness have given Natural Ones a hyper-awareness that other Strains sometimes mistake for paranoia. It is not paranoia if the wasteland is genuinely trying to kill you, and for Natural Ones, it always has been.
Their ancestors were the people who already knew how to survive when the world fell: park rangers, wilderness guides, survivalists who understood water filtration, edible plants, and shelter construction before those skills became matters of life and death for everyone. While others fled to cities or fortified settlements, Natural Ones retreated deeper into the wild. National parks, forests, and swamps became their territory. They built treehouses to stay above the undead. They poled boats through reed-choked rivers. They let the wilderness swallow them, and the Infection, finding hosts already adapted to the land, sharpened what was already there.
The most distinctive biological adaptation is their capacity to thermoregulate. Natural Ones endure extreme heat and cold with a resilience that borders on indifference. Others struggle against weather; Natural Ones press through it. This tolerance has limits, though they are difficult to identify because a Natural One will rarely admit when those limits have been reached. Like their Merican cousins, they have a tendency to push past the point of safety, but where Mericans do it through stubbornness, Natural Ones do it because they genuinely do not notice until too late.
Among the Landsman, Natural Ones are the furthest from civilization by choice and temperament. They are fiercely independent, prefer their own company or that of a small trusted band, and regard unnecessary reliance on others as a character flaw. What others call cautious over-preparation, Natural Ones call Tuesday.

Culture
Culture and cultural heritage
Natural One culture is built on self-reliance and connection to the natural world. Trust is placed in what can be built, repaired, or harvested by one's own hands. Their communities are small, mobile, and organized around practical knowledge of the land and its cycles. Structured environments make them restless; formal hierarchies earn their compliance only when the authority has demonstrated genuine competence in the skills that matter.
There is a divided relationship with technology within the Strain. Some Natural Ones embrace firearms and mechanical tools as practical advantages. Others disdain anything beyond bows, knives, and what can be fashioned from the wilderness itself. This is not a cultural schism so much as a spectrum of individual preference, tolerated because Natural Ones value autonomy too much to dictate another's choices about survival equipment.

Shared customary codes and values
Self-reliance as the foundation of survival. Preparation for every contingency the wasteland can deliver. Deep connection to the natural world that shaped them. Trust in simple, reliable tools and hard-won knowledge over complexity and dependency.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Preparation is the core Natural One custom, practiced so constantly it barely registers as custom at all. Every camp is fortified before nightfall. Every route is scouted before travel. Every pack contains more supplies than the journey requires, because the journey never goes as planned. Outsiders sometimes find this level of readiness excessive. Natural Ones find the alternative, being caught unprepared, genuinely incomprehensible.
Simple, reliable tools and weapons are favored over complex or fragile alternatives. The logic is straightforward: in the deep wasteland, what breaks cannot be repaired, and what depends on components that cannot be scavenged will fail at the worst possible moment. A good knife and knowledge of the land have kept Natural Ones alive for four centuries. Nothing more complicated has proven as reliable.

Common Taboos
Carelessness with the natural environment provokes genuine anger in Natural Ones. Poisoning water sources, burning forests needlessly, or wasting what the land provides are offenses that strike at the core of their identity. The wilderness kept their ancestors alive when everything else failed, and treating it with disrespect is treated as a personal insult to every Natural One who has ever relied on it. Forced dependency, being compelled to rely on others or on technology when self-sufficiency is possible, is equally unwelcome.
Common Myths and Legends
Natural Ones view the Infection with the same pragmatism they apply to every other force of nature. It came. It changed them. Their senses sharpened, their bodies learned to regulate temperature, their awareness expanded to a degree that keeps them alive in environments that kill others. The Infection did not make them survivalists; their ancestors were already that. What it did was refine the tools they already possessed. A Natural One does not worship the Infection or fear it. It is simply part of the wilderness now, as much as the rivers and the weather and the things that hunt in the dark.
