Tainted

Mutant Strain

The mask is the first thing you see. Sharp lines, distorted features, eerie patterns; something designed to unsettle, to communicate danger before a single word is spoken. Behind it, predatory eyes track your movements with a focused intensity that makes the hair on your neck stand up. The Tainted carry themselves like coiled springs: contained energy, controlled aggression, and the constant impression that violence is being held in check by will rather than temperament. Because it is.
The Tainted are the product of a collision between the Infection, radiation, and Bad Brain disease, and they emerged through two distinct paths. "Wild" Tainted evolved naturally from Remnants who were exposed to Bad Brain over generations, their biology gradually adapting to coexist with a disease that turns other Strains into feral Raiders. "Engineered" Tainted arose from laboratory experiments that attempted to cure Bad Brain by injecting Remnants with disease variants. Both groups arrived at the same destination: immunity to Bad Brain's final stage and a suite of biological traits shaped by the interplay of Infection and disease.
The heightened aggression is real, biological, and not mindless. Bad Brain reshaped their neurological systems, amplifying aggressive impulses and affecting mental processing in ways that make the Tainted perpetually aware of threat potential. But aggression, for the Tainted, is a tool wielded with precision. The difference between a Tainted losing control and a Tainted choosing to use their fury is one that outsiders frequently fail to appreciate, usually at significant cost.
Their masks are not costumes. They are deeply personal objects that represent the duality between the person within and the primal nature their biology demands they manage. Some don masks only in battle or moments of high stress. Others wear them constantly, using the physical barrier as a psychological anchor against the aggression that never fully quiets. Among the Mutants, the Tainted are the most feared, the most misunderstood, and, within their inner circles, the most fiercely loyal.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Tainted culture revolves around the management of what they carry inside. Their pack-based loyalty structure creates tight inner circles where fierce commitment replaces the trust that their intense demeanor makes difficult to establish with outsiders. Those admitted to a Tainted's inner circle are treated as family, protected with a passion that can be overwhelming to those unfamiliar with it.
Control is the cultural ideal. Not the suppression of aggression, but its deliberate direction. A Tainted who lashes out without purpose has failed. A Tainted who channels their fury into defending their people, solving a problem, or eliminating a threat has succeeded. The distinction matters enormously within the Strain, even if it is lost on outsiders who see only the violence.

Shared customary codes and values

Control over chaos as the measure of character. Pack loyalty that borders on family devotion. Aggression wielded with intention, never surrendered to blindly. The mask as the truest expression of identity: what you choose to show the world, and what you choose to contain.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

The mask is the defining Tainted custom. Each one is unique, crafted by the individual to reflect their personal story and the duality they navigate between humanity and primal instinct. Some masks are rough and intimidating, designed to project threat. Others are intricate, even beautiful, reflecting the complexity of the person behind them. The creation of a mask is a private act, and the finished product is treated with the reverence others might give a weapon or a talisman. Touching another Tainted's mask without permission is a provocation that crosses the line from social error into personal violation.
The latent psionic pack bond, a biological inheritance from their Bad Brain mutation, creates moments of instinctual communication between Tainted that bypass language entirely. In high-stakes situations, this manifests as coordinated action that requires no planning and no signal, a connection that sometimes extends, troublingly, to Raiders who share the same neurological heritage.

Common Taboos

Equating the Tainted with Raiders is the most dangerous insult available. They share a biological heritage through Bad Brain, and the Tainted know it better than anyone. That knowledge is a burden they carry; having it thrown in their faces by someone who does not understand the distinction between "co-evolved with the disease" and "surrendered to it" will provoke a response that demonstrates exactly how much control the Tainted actually have over their aggression. Touching or handling a Tainted's mask without invitation is similarly forbidden, a violation of something too personal for most outsiders to fully understand.

Common Myths and Legends

The Tainted carry the knowledge of their dual origin without romantic illusion. Some of their kind evolved naturally from Remnants who lived alongside Bad Brain until the Infection adapted them for coexistence. Others were created in laboratories where scientists tried to weaponize the same disease. Both paths produced the same result: immunity to the final stage of Bad Brain, the stage that turns the infected into Raiders. The psionic bond they share with each other, and the unsettling kinship they sometimes feel toward the very Raiders they might have become, is the Infection's reminder that the line between control and surrender is thinner than anyone would like to admit.
