The Lamplighters
The Lamplighters are a Sainthood of Ashes missionary sect dedicated to founding new settlements and teaching survival skills across the wastes. Born from the vision of Nathaniel Carmichael, a preacher from old Baytowne who studied with the sages of the Yard to compile practical survival knowledge, the order follows a simple and self-perpetuating structure: each Lamplighter takes on five students who, upon completing their training, go on to mentor five of their own.
Carmichael's original mission was to build a network of settlements connecting the coasts so that no survivor would ever be more than a short journey from safety. He joined a great westward convoy from the Nor'East with his first five students, each charged with helping breakaway groups establish holdouts wherever fertile land or useful ruins could be found. The convoy's final destination became Mountain Refuge, a settlement in the eastern mountains of the Rust Coast that now serves as the order's most prominent shrine and Carmichael's resting place.
Each generation of Lamplighters collects blueprints for water purifiers, crop rotation schedules, and medical techniques, writing and expanding the Settler's Guide with their own hard-won lessons before passing it to the next class. The collective knowledge grows with every graduating generation. Five students become five teachers become twenty-five pioneers, and the road between safe havens grows shorter with every convoy that follows Carmichael's path westward.
