Toowilluh

Toowilluh is the most dangerous and mysterious irradiated zone in Deserter, sitting at the center of a large Glow Waste where the remains of an ancient military base rust beneath a sky that seems to glow even in daylight. Rusting missiles still jut from the earth where they fell or were stored, never having left the ground despite whatever catastrophe put them there. What was once desert has been transformed by radiation into something resembling toxic swamp, though the moisture pooling in the low places is far from water.
The site crawls with more undead than any other region of Deserter. Their glowing corpses camouflage against the equally glowing ground, making them nearly invisible until they are everywhere at once. The sheer number of the dead, not their individual strength, makes the zone lethal. Mutated plants with thorn-like teeth and vine-like arms crawl across the ground. Acidic gas vents from the earth during daylight hours, choking and burning lungs in minutes. Chemicals and toxicity make passage nearly impossible in some areas. Only the most experienced Darwinists can cross the zone and survive.
Within the crumbling halls of the military base lie old-world secrets preserved by the very radiation that makes them nearly impossible to reach. Generations after the Fall, most of Toowilluh remains unexplored. The temptation of those secrets has been a siren call for treasure hunters and Darwinists alike, drawing the ambitious into a landscape where the soldiers never stopped walking and the missiles never left the earth.

History

Toowilluh was an ancient military base before the Fall, the specifics of which remain buried and largely unexplored generations later. The missiles that never launched still stand embedded in the earth, rusting monuments to a war that ended before they could be fired. The radiation that saturates the zone has preserved old-world secrets in the crumbling halls while simultaneously making them nearly impossible to retrieve. Despite the lethal danger, the temptation of those secrets has been a siren call for treasure hunters and Darwinists who believe the military ruins hold knowledge worth dying for. Most of Toowilluh has never been seen by living eyes since the Fall.
