Unstable
Evolved Strain
Where other Evolved glow subtly, the Unstable blaze. Bright blue light pulses at their necks, wrists, and joints, a Cherenkov-like radiance born from the volatile cycle of luciferin and concentrated irradiated Infection flooding their circulatory systems. It is beautiful in the way a reactor fire is beautiful: mesmerizing and deeply concerning. Their musculature is in perpetual flux, breaking down and rebuilding at a pace that leaves joints requiring stabilization through bindings, braces, and compression garments. The wrappings are not decoration. They are the difference between an Unstable who functions and one who falls apart.
The Unstable are the only Strain in the wasteland that did not evolve through natural selection. They were made. Wasteland scientists seeking beings capable of combating the undead and resisting psionic threats took Psionic Remnants and spliced their DNA with concentrated irradiated Infection, a glowing blue liquid that burned through most subjects before stabilization could occur. The survivors were immensely powerful and catastrophically volatile, unable to survive outside their laboratory chambers. Over time, their biology tempered itself, trading raw destructive potential for something sustainable. When the first Unstable began reproducing naturally, they ceased being an experiment and became a Strain.
That origin lingers. There is a calm detachment to many Unstable that speaks of generations spent under observation rather than in community. They view Zombies with something closer to professional annoyance than fear, seeing them as nuisances to be managed rather than existential threats. They push themselves to their limits with a curiosity that feels more clinical than reckless, testing their own endurance the way their creators once tested their predecessors.
Among the Evolved, the Unstable occupy a unique position: siblings to the Irons and Reclaimers, but born from a laboratory rather than from the pressures of the natural world. Their connection to the Remnants, the Strain whose DNA was used to create them, adds another layer to an already complicated identity.
Culture
Culture and cultural heritage
The calm, detached demeanor common among Unstable is not coldness but a settled awareness of what they are. They know their history. They know their bodies are held together by processes that other Strains would find alarming. The compression garments and stabilizing bindings they wear are treated as symbols of resilience rather than marks of fragility.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Testing personal limits is a recurring practice rather than a formal ritual. Unstable individuals will push themselves physically and mentally, probing the boundaries of their regenerative abilities and their tolerance for strain. This is done with a researcher's curiosity rather than a warrior's bravado, a quiet investigation of what their bodies can sustain before something gives.
