Alan Calhammer

Alan Calhammer is one of the most unassuming people in Old York, which is precisely why tens of thousands of survivors owe him their lives without knowing his name.
The lead scientist of the New Ark Project at the Second Ark, Calhammer is a horticulturalist whose disheveled brown hair and salvaged reading glasses project no physical threat whatsoever. He was personally selected by Matriarch Rowan Marcos to lead the project, a decision that said more about Marcos's instinct for talent than about Calhammer's ambition. He did not seek the position. He sought the soil.
His work catalogues plant species for nutrition, yield, and medicinal value, developing seed programs that can be carried across the wastes and planted in reclamation areas. The Postal Service's seed distribution efforts, the seeds hidden in false-bottomed mail bags and scattered across the continent, began with Calhammer's research. The Earth Reborn Project, which sends teams to reseed ruined cities with self-sustaining gardens, rests on the scientific foundation he built from garden beds at the Second Ark. Thousands of plants have sprouted in territories he has never visited. Countless travelers have eaten food grown from his research without knowing he exists.
He is not well traveled. He does not need to be. The seeds travel for him.

Personal history

Alan Calhammer's contributions to the wasteland are measured in harvests, not headlines. Personally selected by Matriarch Rowan Marcos to lead the New Ark Project at the Second Ark, he has spent his career cataloguing plant species, analyzing soil purity, and developing seed programs designed to restore agriculture across the fallen world.
His tireless research spawned the Postal Service's seed planting efforts, providing the agricultural knowledge that Postwalkers carry alongside their letters. The Earth Reborn Project draws directly on his work, applying his co-dependent planting systems to ruined cities across the continent. Thousands of plants have sprouted in reclamation areas because of his seed programs, and countless travelers have avoided starvation because of crops grown from his research.
Calhammer remains at the Second Ark, working from the garden beds and research plots that have defined his career. He is not well traveled compared to other Sainthood members, and his name carries no recognition among the survivors his work feeds. The scope of what he has built is visible only from a distance: a continental greening that began with one quiet man and a handful of seeds.
Lead scientist of the New Ark Project; quiet architect of the Sainthood's agricultural programs.
