Earth Reborn
Rats and birds carry the future in their bellies. Earth Reborn is a Sainthood of Ashes scientific initiative that designs self-sustaining gardens inside ruined pre-fall cities, betting that food will lure settlers back into the dead zones, and settlers will bring the will to clear the undead.
The project operates from the Ziggurat Agriculture Cooperative in the Heights, a massive red-brick compound with retrofitted greenhouses and open-air planting beds. Its lead engineer, a petite Pure Blood named Cynthia Barnum, designed the initiative's signature method: co-dependent planting systems where tall sunflowers serve as vine terraces for climbing peas, ground-cover fruit suppresses weeds, and every plant's nutrient demands complement rather than compete with its neighbors. Once established, the gardens attract rats, birds, and small mammals that carry seeds outward through their excrement, spreading the growth far beyond the original planting site.
The first test territory north of Old York reached verdant overgrowth within three years. Small mammals and birds colonized within a single season. The vision now extends from the Reach southward to the Lone Star, seeding ruined cities across the continental wastes. The main obstacle is scavengers who strip fruit and seeds before wild propagation can take hold. Earth Reborn began as a vision. Matriarch Rowan Marcos, shortly after her ordination as a Sainthood priestess, stood atop the Ziggurat Co-Op and looked out at the shattered cityscape of Old York. Where others saw ruin, she saw potential. The scientific foundation came from Alan Calhammer's seed research at the Second Ark, but the ambition to plant a garden in every dead city and wait for life to reclaim it was Marcos's own.
