Black Garrison

In the post-war Roman, the Black Garrison is the top rank of fighters, the reigning superstars of the kill. A place in it is not won by a single victory or even a steady record. Fighters rise when they can hold a crowd, move the betting lines, and keep an audience coming back, so that every appearance becomes something worth buying a ticket for. Drawing power, stage presence, and a gift for building a story around themselves count for as much as raw lethality, and the arena grooms its Garrison into outsized personalities, feeding their rivalries and reputations into the money they bring in.
Every member shares one visual foundation and wears it differently: black base armor, reinforced for combat, then customized down a single side of the body so the fighter reads as an individual. The changes are never subtle. Materials, colors, and shapes are chosen so a silhouette carries across the bowl, letting the crowd name a fighter before the announcer does. Many also take contracts alongside the Blacktide Hunters on coastal operations, where the fighting is rougher and less scripted than anything the Roman stages; the work sharpens their reputation, brings in extra pay, and gives some of them a purpose the arena withholds.
Their worth buys them a latitude almost no one else in Stack City enjoys. An offense that would land instantly on anyone else is ignored, deflected, or handled off the books when a Garrison fighter is involved, and none of it is written down. All of it evaporates the moment a member stops drawing eyes. A slipping star gets booked into high-risk matches against rising talent, staged either to pull them back into the light or to let them die building a newcomer's legend, and any member caught working against the Roman is quietly entered into the dark-circuit Infection-transfer bouts. The Garrison is the Roman's core lesson made flesh: it turns people into icons and keeps the icons dependent on the machine that made them.

Structure

Entry into the Black Garrison is a matter of drawing power more than a win-loss record. A fighter is elevated once they can command a crowd, move the betting, and sustain interest over time, and the arena then cultivates that fighter as a personality larger than the sport, folding rivalries and reputation into the value they generate.
The look is a shared foundation worn differently: a uniform black base of reinforced armor, deliberately altered along one side of the body so each fighter is recognizable from a distance. Beyond the arena, many members contract with the Blacktide Hunters on coastal operations, less controlled work that extends both reputation and income while officially staying within the region.
The Garrison's protection is real but conditional, holding only as long as a member keeps drawing attention and thinning fast once they do not. Fading fighters are booked into high-risk matches against newcomers, and any member who works against the Roman's interests is entered into the dark-circuit Infection-transfer fights. Two kinds of member emerge under that pressure: those who embrace what the Roman has made them, leaning into spectacle and taking contracts freely, and those who see the structure for what it is, operate carefully, and find their real purpose in the rougher work alongside the Blacktide Hunters.

History

The Black Garrison was founded and trained by Garrison Black, and in its earlier form it fielded roughly fifty of the toughest combatants in Aysea, drawn from skilled slaves, free fighters chasing recognition, and criminals working off their sentences. Members were known by their black outfits, the fine armor they bought with their own winnings, and a shared back tattoo of a figure holding a severed head above the letters BG. The stable fought for Black's interests and took outside contracts, which produced strange bidding wars where families paid the Garrison not to fight, but the one thing it could never be bought to do was lose. The pride of both fighters and owner ran too deep to throw a match for credits.
Through the slave quarters ran an inspirational tale: that Garrison Black had once been a slave gladiator who fought his way to freedom and ownership. The Board knew the story was false and endorsed it anyway, because a dream of earned freedom kept the desperate fighting and the arena profitable.
The Division War carried the Garrison into its present form. A stable of prized fighters became the Roman's celebrity tier, and the currency shifted from simple prowess to drawing power, narrative, and public fixation. The old logic of ownership gave way to a subtler arrangement in which the fighters are not property but prospects, contenders, and contracted killers, raised into temporary gods and kept dependent on the machine that made them.
