Garrison Black

Standing over six feet tall, incredibly well built despite his age, with graying hair and a scarred face that gives the impression of a war-torn veteran. Garrison Black is the owner and trainer of the Black Garrison gladiator stable in the Roman arena, and he never seems to smile. When he laughs, the sound roars through buildings. It only comes when someone is being horribly killed.
The slaves dream of being Garrison Black. The widely told story claims he was once a slave gladiator who fought so masterfully in the arena that he earned his freedom and became owner of the Garrison by right and prowess. He preaches this tale to his fighters as motivation, and the Board approves the fiction because of the morale boost it gives the slave population. The true story is something else entirely: he grew up in a wealthy family that was executed by a rival faction when he was sixteen. He survived with the scars on his face, took his inherited fortune, bought a crack team of fighters, and systematically assassinated everyone who knew him in his former life. If the slaves knew his real story, they might burn the arena down instead of dreaming.
In the present Stack City, Garrison Black stands among the Roman's true legends, a Yorker whose name drunk crowds bellow and young fighters invoke while still mistaking notoriety for immortality. He carries the marks of a man who has outlasted a machine built to burn through its stars, hard-faced and heavy through the shoulders, his old wounds never quite closing because the city keeps finding fresh uses for him. He grasps every tier of the arena's economy and swings that understanding like a weapon, able to move a crowd, break a rising contender, win over a patron, or frighten a handler with barely a shift in tone. Before the public he is an armored black emblem of the city's hunger; away from the lights he knows exactly where the bodies go once the cheering dies, making certain the broken are stripped for Infection and choosing who is allowed to bleed and fight again.

Personal history

The public version of Garrison Black's life is an inspiration: a slave who earned his freedom in the arena and rose to own the very stable that once held him. The Board endorses this narrative because it keeps the slave population hopeful and compliant.
The truth is that Garrison grew up wealthy, with a love of the Roman but never truly part of its blood-soaked world. When he was sixteen, a rival faction executed his entire family. He survived with a scarred face and an inherited fortune. Rather than rebuild his family's former enterprises, he bought a team of fighters and systematically killed everyone who knew his former identity. The false legend grew around him, and the Black Garrison became the premier stable in Aysea under his natural eye for talent and expert training. He is a molder of men who has himself been molded by violence and survival into something the arena understands perfectly.
Whatever the truth of his origins, Garrison Black is the figure the modern Roman took its tone from. He helped teach the arena to forge its killers into public legend, and in private he embodies the older truth of the place, that spectacle only holds up when someone hard enough guards it from the inside. The Black Garrison draws its whole cultural register from men like him, and his authority rests on the simple fact of having lasted far longer than anyone believed survivable.
