Bull Gator
Twelve feet long and four feet across the torso, the Bull Gator is the apex ambush predator of the Rum Coast swamps. It earns its nickname, the Swamp Steamer, from the deafening hiss that erupts a fraction of a second before the animal launches itself from concealment. By the time the sound registers, the gator is already moving, and at close range nothing on two legs can outrun the initial charge.
Bull Gators lurk motionless in water and swamp reed beds, waiting for prey to wander within a few feet before exploding into action. The attack is built around the death roll: once those massive jaws close, the gator grapples and twists, shredding anything caught in its grip through sheer rotational force. Thick natural armor plating makes the animal difficult to bring down even after it has been engaged, and it moves with far more speed in water than its stocky land profile suggests.
Raider clans across the Rum Coast have attempted to capture Bull Gators for use as mounts, losing dozens of members in the process. The Leather Back Raiders are the only group to have cracked the problem, stealing hatchlings from clutches and raising them from birth to accept riders. The sight of a Leather Back astride a full-grown Bull Gator is one of the most feared spectacles in the southern swamps, a rolling wall of scaled muscle guided by someone who understands the animal well enough to survive the partnership.
