Flinty Farms
From the outside, a Flinty Farm looks like what it claims to be: a working agricultural operation growing corn, fungus, hops, and irradiated strains of artichoke. The soil is constantly tilled. The crops rotate on schedule. Massive reinforced buildings sit where any farm might have barns and storage. The smell is exactly what a person would expect from a facility that distills, fertilizes, and processes organic material at industrial scale.
That smell is the point. The agricultural stench covers what lies beneath: a series of cell locations where unwilling Strain and mutated animal subjects are held, on average two dozen per site, as breeding grounds for toxic substances. The Flinty Farms are a network of Dead Market production facilities hidden under agricultural cover, operating in service of the Iron Works' life-extension programs.
The work conducted inside is straightforward in its horror. Infectious materials are harvested from dying Unstable and Remnants for mass production of Lazarus Draughts. Infection buffers are developed that temporarily increase a Strain's capacity to survive death, extending the effective lifespan of the recipient for months at a time. The products are distributed as reinforcement packages for Iron Works front-line troops and as bribes to allied groups in Vegasia, the Rat King's Domain, and the Ayesea. The long-term goal is permanent life extension, though the researchers acknowledged they remained years away from that breakthrough.
Guard patrols operated around the exterior perimeter, most of them unaware of the facility's true purpose. An Iron Works agent led each patrol unit and ensured that anyone who learned too much was killed. Some guards had undergone the infection-enhancement procedure themselves, making them significantly harder to put down permanently.
The facility targeted during the Infection Farm operation was the furthest in the network from Iron Works territory. Its proximity to non-Iron Works settlements allowed rapid transport of resources, while its distance from the Iron Works bought a narrow window before news of any raid could travel home. A combined force of the Doctors of the Final Plague, the Holy Engineers Union, local settlement defenders, and Trade Union-funded resistance fighters tracked the farm's workers using blacklight-responsive infectious trails, captured guards for interrogation, and mounted a full siege to recover research materials before the operators could destroy the evidence and release disease into the surrounding soil and wildlife.
