Full Dead

Gorger Strain

Something is wrong with the way they smile. Not the mechanics of it; the muscles move correctly, the timing is appropriate, and the eyes crinkle at the edges the way eyes should. But the warmth is performance. A Full Dead's charm is a survival strategy learned by studying the living, perfected over years of careful observation and deliberate mimicry. Beneath the pleasant exterior is something profoundly alien: a sentient being assembled from death itself, carrying the fragmented memories of minds it never possessed.
Full Dead are not born. They emerge from the Mortis Amaranthine, reconstituted from decomposing biomass that the fungal network reclaims and reshapes into something capable of thought and movement. Often the raw material is not a single corpse but an amalgamation of several, which means a Full Dead's identity is built on a patchwork of recollections from multiple consumed minds. There is no childhood. There is no family history. There is an unceasing internal chorus of overlapping voices and fragmented memories that accompanies every waking moment.
Their biology is as strange as their origins. Blood does not flow through their veins; a specialized air sac replaces their lungs, allowing vocalization without true breathing. Their metabolism has nearly halted, enabling them to survive on remarkably little sustenance. What sustenance they do require is grim: the chemical cadaverine, produced by the decomposition of ingested flesh, is what binds them to the Mortis and prevents their bodies from dissolving back into the earth. Heat accelerates their tissue breakdown. A persistent odor of decay, however carefully masked with dried flowers and perfume, accompanies them everywhere.
Among the Gorger Lineage, Full Dead occupy the space between the feral predation of the Lascarians and the calculated hunger of the Semper Mort. They are strategists, observers, and mimics whose apparent warmth makes them the most socially functional of their kin, and the most unsettling once you understand what that warmth actually is.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Full Dead culture, such as it is, revolves around the careful study and reproduction of living social behaviors. Their apparent warmth, their interest in community, their collection of sentimental objects: all of these are learned rather than innate, adopted deliberately as strategies for acceptance in a world that regards them as monsters. This is not to say the behaviors are insincere. A Full Dead who joins a settlement and contributes to its defense may genuinely value the connections they form. But the mechanism is mimicry first and feeling second, and the gap between those two things is where the Full Dead's strangeness lives.
Their relationship to the past is complicated by the fragments of pre-Fall memory many of them carry. Anachronistic curiosity about customs and aesthetics from centuries ago surfaces unpredictably, giving their interactions an odd, displaced quality that other Strains find alternately charming and disconcerting.

Shared customary codes and values

Calculated survival through cunning and social adaptation. The belief that identity can be built rather than inherited, even from borrowed memories. Strategic pragmatism in all interactions. A fascination with the living that is part admiration, part study, and part something that defies easy categorization.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Full Dead accumulate personal objects with a deliberateness that reveals how hard they work to construct an identity from scratch. Small items of sentimental significance, tokens whose value cannot be measured in trade, are gathered and kept close. These collections serve as anchors, external proof of experiences and connections that a mind built from fragmented memories might otherwise struggle to hold.
The masking of their decay scent is a universal practice, carried out with everything from dried herb bundles to salvaged perfume vials. It is one of the few customs that is purely practical: the persistent odor of decomposition is a social barrier that even the most charming Full Dead cannot talk their way past without help.

Common Taboos

The Full Dead do not discuss their feeding requirements openly, and those who force the topic find that the carefully constructed social facade can drop with unsettling speed. Equally unwelcome is the conflation of Full Dead with mindless zombies. They are sentient, self-aware beings who clawed their way to consciousness from the Mortis Amaranthine. Treating them as monsters because of what sustains them, or because of how they came into being, is an insult that cuts deeper than most outsiders suspect.

Common Myths and Legends

The Full Dead know exactly what they are and how they came to be. The Mortis Amaranthine reclaimed the bodies of the dead, reconstituted them from decomposing biomass, and produced something capable of thought and will. Whether this constitutes creation, recycling, or something in between is a question each Full Dead answers differently. What they share is the understanding that cadaverine, derived from the flesh of the living, is what sustains the connection between their assembled bodies and the Mortis. Without it, they dissolve. The Infection gave them existence, and it demands payment in kind.
