Inmates of Fort Wash and Talkie
Fort Wash and Talkie is a series of entrenched bunkers and walled defenses penetrating into the edge of the Overgrowth, and every person stationed there has already accepted that they are dead. The Inmates are members of the Fallow Hopes faith who were found wanting, who committed heresies, or who accepted their final walk into the wasteland. They were given one more chance to serve: holding the line against the Western Overgrowth with fire, blades, and daily strike missions into territory that wants them gone.
New Inmates have their heads shaved and receive cell and unit number tattoos on their brows. All worldly possessions are surrendered. In return, each receives a water container, a rations container, a leather jumpsuit, one set of scrap armor, and a utility combat blade. The Cell Block Leaders, an upper caste primarily from the Nation of Accensor, control access to better equipment: munitions, explosives, and heavier armor.
The roads through Fort Wash and Talkie are called Death Row, lined with stone and debris bunkers carved into the earth, overseen by jumpsuit-wearing guards who have nothing left to lose. Travelers who attempt passage face searches at both entry and exit. Anyone carrying reliquaries of heretical faith has their supplies confiscated and their body impaled outside the walls. The corpses serve as both bait and warning.
The most feared checkpoint is the psion corridor: a narrow passage flanked by chained Blind Hunter zombies behind iron bars. The undead are sensitive to psionic potential. If the Blind Hunters stir when a visitor passes, that visitor never leaves the chamber.
