Iron Tusk Mammoth

The ground shakes before you see it. A deep, rhythmic tremor that travels through the soles of your boots and into your chest, growing stronger with each pulse. Then the trees part, or the brush flattens, or the ridgeline darkens with a silhouette that does not make sense at first because the brain refuses to accept that something this large is alive. The Iron Tusk Mammoth stands fourteen to eighteen feet tall at the shoulder and weighs between nine and eleven tons. Its body is covered in heavy, dark brown matted fur layered deep enough that the thorns, biting insects, and barbed plants of the Overgrowth never reach the leathery skin beneath.
The tusks are what give the creature its name and its reputation. The mammoth's diet consists of mineral-heavy vegetation found in the rockier terrain at the Overgrowth's lower-density edges, and over a lifetime of consuming this diet, naturally occurring metals accumulate in the tusks and hooves. Young mammoths show only a faint sheen. Older individuals carry tusks that gleam with an unmistakable metallic luster, and the most active beasts, the ones that have charged, gored, and ground their tusks against stone and bone, display a polish that looks almost deliberate. Wastelanders who encounter Iron Tusk Mammoths learn to read the shine: the brighter the tusk, the more dangerous the animal.
In temperament, the mammoth is peaceful. It grazes. It moves through the lower Overgrowth in small family groups, using its long prehensile nose to strip leaves and uproot shrubs. It does not hunt. It does not seek conflict. But when it perceives a threat to its young or its herd, the transformation is absolute. Eleven tons of muscle accelerates to a charge that nothing in the wasteland can stop. The metal-laced tusks gore, the metal-laced hooves crush, and the heavy fur absorbs blows that would fell lesser creatures. By the time the mammoth has decided you are a threat, the only survivable response is to not be where it is going. The ground shakes. The trees part. And then there is nothing to do but run.
