Tent Town
From a distance across the flat Tinderlands plains, a dozen or more colorful canvas tents rise against the sky, sturdy in the breeze. People tend fires outside while animals graze nearby. It looks like a veritable town, and the outsiders who named it Tent Town were not entirely wrong, except that this particular town can pack up and vanish between sunsets.
Tent Town belongs to the Fortin Clan, a Rover family that traverses the Tinderlands with their horses, goats, and cattle. Despite appearances of thriving, daily survival is a constant struggle. The Rovers bundle in cloth and furs against the cold and use animals for warmth during the coldest nights. When game is abundant they hunt; when it is scarce they drink goat milk mixed with goat blood. Water comes from squeezing the spongy scrub grasses found across the plains, wringing moisture from a landscape that looks like it has none to give.
The Fortin Clan is hospitable to travelers who find them. They ask only for compensation: coins, shared food, or even a story if the traveler has nothing else. Crossing the clan, however, invites Rover Justice, and the Tinderlands offer a great deal of empty space in which to settle accounts.
