The Appleseeds
The Appleseeds are a joint venture between the Sainthood of Ashes and the Cult of Fallow Hopes, based at the Second Ark on the Hudson River well north of Old York's center. The Ark is a cluster of beached pre-fall barges and military ships converted into garden beds, research labs, and barracks. The Sainthood tends the soil while the Fallow Hopes guard the waterways and shoreline, a partnership of growers and soldiers that has produced one of the most valuable resources in the wastes: viable seeds.
The alliance began when Sainthood faithful among an excavation team discovered beached vessels containing enriched soil in the Iron Gardens waterways. Recognizing the find's potential, the Sainthood partnered with the Cult of Fallow Hopes to exploit it, and the Appleseeds were born. Under lead scientist Alan Calhammer, personally selected by Matriarch Rowan Marcos, the operation catalogs every cultivated plant and records its uses. Research focuses on which foods provide the most efficient nutrition, how to extract the highest possible yield from limited garden beds, and the development of medicinal plant extracts.
Seeds flow south to the Ziggurat Garden Co-Op, north to a Baytowne Sainthood reserve, and aboard a massive barge set adrift for wild-growth seeding on distant shores. The seed catalog compiled at the Ark may be the single most valuable document in the wastes. Seeds are described as being worth a thousand times their weight in currency, and the Appleseeds control the supply.
