Magma Beetle
The Magma Beetle is small, colorful, and responsible for more wildfire damage than any natural weather pattern in the Overgrowth region. Its dark red, orange, and black markings stand out against the green forest floor like a warning sign, which is exactly what they are. Under normal circumstances, the beetle lives a quiet life beneath bark and in leaf litter at the edges of the Overgrowth, bothering no one and drawing little attention. Then a fire starts, and the Magma Beetle's biology takes over.
Where every other creature in the forest flees from a blaze, the Magma Beetle flies toward it. The species' reproductive cycle depends on charred wood: females lay eggs beneath the bark of burned trees, and the larvae require nutrients found only in fire-damaged timber. When smoke rises, swarms of Magma Beetles converge on the blaze like iron filings drawn to a magnet. They mate in the heat and ash, and then the males do something that no other insect in the region does. They fly into the fire, allow their bodies to catch and smolder, and then carry that smoldering ember to new locations, deliberately spreading the fire to create more breeding territory.
A contained campfire, a lightning strike on a dead tree, a slash-and-burn clearing meant to push back the Overgrowth's encroaching vegetation: any of these can become an uncontrollable wildfire once the beetles arrive. Settlements near the Overgrowth's edge treat fire with a caution that goes beyond the flames themselves. It is not the fire that scares them. It is what the fire attracts, and what the attracted beetles do next.
