Parasitic Critter

The most unsettling thing about a parasitic critter is not the creature itself. It is what happens to the people around it. One moment your scouting partner is standing next to you, weapon ready, watching the tree line. The next, they turn and swing at your head, and their eyes say they have no idea why their arms are moving. Parasitic Command does not care about loyalty, willpower, or how many years you have survived together. It cares about proximity, and it turns friends into weapons.
Parasitic critters are manipulators. Where other scope types rely on direct physical damage, these creatures specialize in subverting the targets around them. They attach to hosts, commandeer nervous systems, and redirect the behavior of other creatures (including survivors) to serve their needs. The presence of a single parasitic critter in an area is never the whole problem. It is the signal that something has already been compromised, that the creatures nearby may not be acting on their own volition, and that the real threat is not the parasite you can see but the network of influence it has already established.
Physically, these creatures are built around their method of host infiltration. Some carry sharpened proboscises for direct neural injection. Others sport fluid sacs attached to scorpion-like tails. A few display rings of lamprey-like teeth designed to anchor into flesh and hold. The body is compact, optimized for attaching rather than fighting, which is why the direct combat capability of a parasitic critter is deceptively low. It does not need to hit hard when it can make your allies hit you instead.
At Nuisance tier, a single use of Parasitic Command is a manageable threat. By Menace tier, five uses of Command plus Parasitic Infection and Area of Effect No Escape create a kill zone where the parasite controls multiple targets and nobody can flee. Catastrophic tier adds Friend of Raider or Friend of Zombie, meaning the creature has already established a parasitic relationship with one of the wasteland's most dangerous factions. At Apocalyptic tier, ten uses of Parasitic Command, Critter High Threat Immunities, and Absorb x10 produce something that can turn an entire group against itself while draining the survivors it does not bother to control. Mental protection is the primary counter. Without it, you are fighting your own people.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The form follows the function, and the function is infiltration. Parasitic critters display a range of attachment mechanisms depending on the specific mutation: sharpened proboscises capable of piercing through clothing and skin to reach the nervous system, bulbous fluid sacs connected to scorpion-like tails that inject control agents on contact, or concentric rings of lamprey-like teeth that anchor into flesh and resist removal.
The body itself is compact and somewhat unimposing compared to other scope types. These creatures do not need the bulk of an armored critter or the musculature of a carnivore. Their physical form is a delivery system, optimized for getting close to a host and establishing a connection. The overall impression is unsettling rather than intimidating: something small, purposeful, and alien in the way it moves, as though the creature is always evaluating potential hosts rather than responding to threats.

Biological Traits

Parasitic Command is the defining ability, scaling from one use at Nuisance to ten at Apocalyptic. Each use turns a target against its allies, and at the highest tier, a group of ten survivors faces the statistical certainty that everyone will be commanded at some point during the encounter. Parasitic Infection at Menace tier and above establishes more persistent control, and Takedown provides the physical setup for attachment.
Absorb drains fluids from targets to restore the creature's health, scaling from two uses at Menace to ten at Apocalyptic. Blood Scent at Catastrophic tier tracks wounded targets, and Area of Effect No Escape prevents disengagement from the encounter zone. Mental Armor appears at every tier, reflecting the creature's psychic sophistication, and Natural Armor joins it at Catastrophic tier.
The notable absence is direct damage output. No Brawling Strike Spike Damage appears at any tier. No Sturdy Critter. No physical damage reduction. The parasitic critter is not designed to win fights through physical force. It wins by making other people fight for it. Mental protection abilities are the most reliable counter; without them, the creature's low direct-combat stats are irrelevant because it will never need to fight you itself.

Behaviour

Parasitic critters do not behave like predators. They behave like strategists, at least in effect. The creature seeks hosts to command rather than prey to consume, and its approach reflects that priority. Lower-tier specimens use Parasitic Command to turn a single target against its companions, creating confusion and splitting group cohesion. The creature itself hangs back, using the commanded target as both weapon and shield.
At higher tiers, the strategy compounds. Parasitic Infection establishes longer-term control. Takedown drops targets to the ground for easier attachment. Area of Effect No Escape seals the engagement zone, preventing anyone from retreating to regroup. By Catastrophic tier, the presence of Friend of Raider or Friend of Zombie means the parasitic critter has already embedded itself within a faction's territory, and encounters may involve Raiders or undead that are acting under parasitic influence without realizing it. The creature's territory is less a hunting ground and more a web of compromised organisms, each serving the parasite's needs in ways that may not be immediately obvious to newcomers.
