Shattered Genome
The air glows faintly with green and violet arcs. Surfaces ripple and deform as if the ground itself is breathing. Sounds echo in reverse, and light moves with a pulse rather than a flicker. This is what happens when radiation, psionic resonance, and dormant necrological contamination collide in a space where the Infection was already unstable: the Shattered Genome, the point where mutation stops being a process and becomes an event.
Within the zone, the Infection no longer follows natural laws. It rewrites them. Zombies regenerate faster but fall apart mid-motion, their bodies unable to hold the shapes they are being forced into. Critters fuse into unrecognizable forms. Aberrants become volatile beacons of psionic discharge, triggering psychic aftershocks simply by existing. Raiders (except Burners) avoid the area entirely; the radiation boils their Infection on contact. The entire zone behaves as if the Infection itself is running an experiment on the blueprint of life, iterating at lethal speed, and it has forgotten how to stop.
The Shattered Genome originates from Morgue spaces that have catastrophically failed: detonated reactors, collapsed necro-labs, Corrupted Morgues allowed to fester until the contamination becomes self-sustaining. The phenomenon permeates outward for miles. It cannot spread through traditional infection vectors; it is tied to geography. But contaminated blood, organs, and artifacts removed from the zone retain unstable psionic and genetic signatures that cause hallucinations, spasms, and temporary mutations in anyone who handles them without containment gear. The zone is in constant flux. Radiation spikes, psychic interference, and biological mutation alternate without rhythm. Electronic devices malfunction. Infection-based abilities fluctuate between amplification and suppression with no discernible pattern.
What makes the Shattered Genome uniquely terrifying is its relationship with Resolve. Upon entering the zone, each character receives sealed envelope packets equal to their total Resolve. Whenever they spend a point of Resolve, they must immediately open a packet and execute whatever mechanics are inside: a random psionic or mutation event that could be anything from an unpreventable nerve burn to an uncontrolled healing surge, from a Fracture erupting in the mind to a psionic discharge that slams into the nearest person for twenty Body damage. The system turns every act of willpower into a gamble. The Genome rewards action but punishes control. Restraint is as dangerous as boldness, and certainty does not exist within the zone's borders.
The disease compounds on itself with horrifying efficiency. At Stages 2 and 3, the carrier gains Fractures and their Aberrant Impact Skills accelerate, refreshing at five minutes instead of twenty and triggering twice per use. This initially feels like an advantage. Then Stage 4 arrives, and the carrier becomes an outbreak. Every expenditure of Resolve, every entry into Bleedout, sends an area-of-effect call that inflicts Shattered Genome on all nearby Aberrants with no defense. One Stage 4 carrier triggers advancement in others. Two trigger each other. Three or more create a cascading failure that can permanently kill every carrier in the zone within hours. The disease was never designed to be survived in groups. It was designed to demonstrate what happens when the Infection decides to rewrite reality from the inside, and the answer is that reality does not come back. Those who die within the Genome's borders leave behind crystallized husks that hum faintly, as if remembering the person they once were.

Radiation, psionics, and necrological contamination fused into uncontrollable cascading mutation. Every use of Resolve triggers a random psionic event. Stage 4 carriers become walking outbreaks. Reality-breaking escalation that compounds until everything is consumed.
